5 Top Whiskies for Burns Night (and They’re Not All Scottish!)
January 19, 2018
Here at Luxuria Lifestyle, we enjoy the finer things, so it’s not like we need an excuse to crack open a beautiful bottle of whisky on a Thursday night! As it turns out though, next Thursday is Burn’s Night – the chance to celebrate Scottish poet Robert Burns with a wee dram (or bottle) of the stuff. Here’s five bottles you should invest in for a nightcap by the roaring fire, whilst reciting some of Burns’ favourite poems!
The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve
Created in honour of founder Glenlivet’s founder George Smith, this whisky captures the taste he first envisioned in 1824. Pale gold in colour, fruity on the nose and with a fresh punchy orange and toffee apples on the palate, it has a long, smooth finish. The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve is selected from a range of traditional oak casks of different ages, while Master Distiller Alan Winchester marries together the aged oak casks with American first-fill oak casks for a unique flavour. The perfect Burns Night treat, Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve is priced at £34.15 and available from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Morrisons, ASDA, www.thewhiskyexchange.com and all specialist retailers.
The Dublin Liberties Irish Whiskey
Just because Burns was Scottish, doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good Irish whiskey does it?! With a 46% blend of malt and grain whiskies, its name comes from the Liberties area of Dublin which back in the 1700s, was watched over by an oak-carved devil which mysteriously disappeared. According to legend, the carving was made into whiskey barrels, which infused the maturing spirit! Complex in character and equally enjoyable in a cocktail or on its own (we’d recommend just one cube of ice to bring out that flavour), The Dublin Liberties Oak Devil is of course, still made in Ireland and smells unmistakably malty on the nose, along with oaky, woody notes and strong, punchy fruits. Smooth to drink with hints of caramel, mixed spice, cinnamon and treacle, there’s some spice and a long finish. De-licious. (£35.00 for 70cl. AbV 46%. available from 31Dover.com and Dublin Airport).
Capturing the finesse of the 19th Century, Longmorn whiskies have a long standing fan base and understandably so! A luxurious range of single malts, whisky connoisseurs will tell you Longmorn is one of their their best kept secrets!
Pioneer John Duff has been creating these elegant Scotch’s since the Victorian era. Sourcing pure spring water pumped by a wheel on the burn and even extending the local railway route so that his elegant whiskies could be shared with its customers as quickly as possible, Longmorn was established back in 1894 and has grown from strength to strength.
With a new boutique range which really captures the luxury of these exquisite single malts, you can now indulge in the Longmorn Distillers Choice along with latest expressions the Longmorn 16YO and the 23YO.
Longmorn 16YO (£94.99) and Longmorn 23YO (£450.00) are both available from Master of Malt and other specialist retailers.
The Dubliner Irish Whiskey & Honeycomb Liqueur
Ahh this goes down a treat on a cold winter’s night! A deliciously smooth blend of honeycomb, caramel and triple distilled Irish Whiskey, The Dubliner Irish Whiskey & Honeycomb Liqueur is a sweet, smooth and moreish creation.
