Atelier Zuhra, London Fashion Week

Blazing bright and beautiful on the London Fashion Week 2020 schedule was Atelier Zuhra’s standout collection—‘The Immaculate Flight of the Phoenix’—unveiled at the iconic Royal Opera House in London.

I was invited to attend the show on a typically grey London morning, but inside the arching windowed walls of the Royal Opera House was a whole other story as attendees were treated to a stunningly colourful collection.

Much like a phoenix, the palette was regal and vibrant from mint greens to gentle lilacs to bold, burning pinks. There were also some more neutral pieces in black, charcoal grey and nude but they did not shy away from Atelier Zuhra’s bold silhouettes, with feathered shoulders and intricate embroidery. Frothy, fairytale skirts with extravagant trains were truly the standout pieces, having the models sweeping down the runway like modern-day princesses. Rich, decadent and regal, Atelier Zuhra’s pieces are dazzling and timeless.

A thing I really loved seeing in this collection was seeing a selection of models adorned with embodied headscarves, culturally representative of the Muslim community and the company’s roots. In an industry that’s predominantly white, seeing this representation on the runway feels like another step forward towards change and increasing diversity.

Rayan Al Sulaimani is the female entrepreneur behind Atelier Zuhra’s growing success and since opening its first couture atelier in Dubai in 2015, Atelier Zuhra has quickly become the go-to-couturier for Arab royals, Bollywood actresses and Hollywood stars. And with pieces as gorgeous as these, Atelier Zuhra’s latest stunning collection will have them clamouring for more.
