Ayurvedic Healing: Tradition turned Trend!

Holistic, alternative and traditional methods are making a huge comeback in today’s wellness industry. Gaining popularity from scientific evidence of the intense effects of the mind-body connection, as well as a cultural shift towards natural medicine and beatify products; Ayurveda continues to be one of the world’s most sophisticated health systems. The return of this ancient practice has sparked a global movement where traditional medicines and thoughts on healing… have become a trend!

The practice of Ayurveda has been around for centuries, 5 000 years to be exact when Indian monks began looking for new ways to preserve their health. It’s long-standing history dates back to 2nd Century BC and is rooted in Indian culture, stemming from ancient Hindu philosophical teachings.

What is Ayurveda?

Simply put, Ayurveda refers to the “science of life” and is founded on the belief that health is the greatest level of wealth one can attain in their life. In Ayurveda, the ‘one-size-fits-all’ rule is thrown out the window. The practice respects the uniqueness of each individual and offers natural ways to treat diseases and promote health.

Its ancient scripts maintain that each person’s health is made up of the harmonious interaction of the body, mind and the living environment. This way of life aims to bring about the perfect balance of the entire personality. Ayurveda is designed to prevent illness and promote wellness by balancing the mind, body and spirit through a series of massages, yoga, meditation, diet, herbs and metals that cleanse the body of impurities.

International Luxuria Lifestyle ambassadors Nicole Bessick and Jo Freeman headed off to the award-winning Barberyn Beach Ayurveda Resort in the heart of the Sri Lankan jungle to do just that.

Barberyn Beach Ayurveda Resort

Located on the Southern tip of Sri Lanka, the authentic, stripped back resort is built on the contours of a naturally landscaped ground facing its celebrated beaches and lush valley and has become the island nation’s most authentic, holistic healing resort.

Winner of the Tourism Award for 2009, 2010 and 2011 and included in the Hall of Fame for these accolades, Barberyn Beach stands in testimony to the spirit of Sri Lankan holistic wellness, craftsmanship and environmental sustainability.

A quiet serenity pervades the beautiful resort, which has been providing Ayurveda at its best since 2003 and earned the resort its well-deserved Green Environment trophy in 2016. With its breath-taking views of the Indian Ocean; the resort’s authentic architecture blends beautifully with indigenous design to create a feeling of truly being one with the environment – allowing guests to be one with nature and enjoy the healing that comes from within.

The resort provides the perfect atmosphere to enjoy the “Barberyn Ayurveda Experience” which is based on over 20 years of knowledge and experience and aims to bring harmony to the body, mind and spirit.

The Barberyn Ayurveda Experience

The two main principles of Ayurveda are that the mind and body are inextricably connected and that nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind. Much like wellness, some of the most important aspects of Ayurvedic practice includes holistic wellness, a colourful, flavoursome vegetarian diet, living in tune with nature and tuning your body through exercise.

Wellness with the Barberyn Health Centre

While Western medicine identifies the disease and then cures the symptoms, Ayurveda reaches much deeper and seeks to cure the cause of the problem, holistically. Upon arrival, an Ayurvedic doctor assesses what you need holistically, and based on ancient methodology and practice, prescribes a dedicated Ayurvedic treatment programme depending on the state of your health, existing medical conditions and duration of your stay.

The Ayurveda Health Centre prepares a range of daily fresh herbal medicines are prescribed according to each individual’s assessment, and the team of over twenty physicians and one hundred therapists conduct an array of Ayurvedic treatments based on those prescriptions. Ayurvedic Therapies provided at Barberyn Resorts include synchronized oil massages, herbal baths, acupuncture, fermentation, facial treatments, head oil baths and herbal decoctions to name a few.

A vegetarian diet carefully crafted by the Barberyn Head Chef

Ayurveda recommends a fundamentally vegetarian diet, and the Barberyn Resorts’ restaurant offers a wide variety of colourful, flavoursome dishes, with the occasional serving of fish for non-vegetarian guests. The Barberyn Resort’s kitchen coordinates with their Health Centre to provide each guest with the food and drinks recommended for their Ayurvedic Treatment Program. Dieticians are present during meal times to help advise guests on the best food selections for their individual treatment regiments.

Tuning your body through exercise at the Barberyn Yoga Pavilion

The roots of Ayurveda and yoga are closely connected, with yoga being considered an ideal complement to Ayurvedic treatments on account of its calming influence on the mind. The large, light, airy Barberyn Yoga Pavilion provides the perfect environment for guests to enjoy the resort’s daily sunrise Yoga Asana, and the after-sunset meditation sessions.

“I left absolutely floored by what Ayurvedic rejuvenation can do for the mind, body and soul. Words fail humbly when trying to express just how much this trip has touched me.” – Nicole Bessick
