Chucs in Kensington has all the makings of a modern sophisticated speakeasy

Chucs nestled 2-minutes down the road from South Kensington in a gorgeously blue space situated on the corner of the winding roads. It’s subtle prohibition service contrasts with its forthright food. The term ‘Britalian’ is a little laboured, but the focus on quality ingredients through an Italian lens really works.

The space offers an intimate dining experience for locals and foodies alike. We were seated in a gorgeous little corner that allowed us to watch the bar staff making cocktails but still enjoy the passers by along the bustling high street – quite an experience.

To start with I ordered the salmon  with capers and lemon – a simple yet tantalizing dish that fired me up for the main course.  My colleague went for the tuna which was delicious and not to overpowering for the pallette.

This was followed by a beautifully cooked t-bone steak, which had incredible depth of flavour due to the cooking method of being fried and then glazed in the oven. The steak was  the highlight dish of the night in my eyes . We did also try the crab linguine, which was delicious but slighltly over salted and in need of more seasoning.

Our server for the evening was also very good at supporting us with the choice of wine, we went with a Neprica Primitivo (2017) which complimented the mains & added to the atmosphere of almost escaping the hustle and bustle of London for one magical evening.

Due to a kitchen equipment error we were not able to have dessert, however were given the chance to sample two delicious cocktails from the menu and went for the classic margarita. It was well made.

Chucs Kensingtons new opening  coincides with the appointment of new Executive Chef Director, Simon Henbery, who joins the group following leading roles at Fifteen London, Barbecoa and Ace Hotel Shoreditch – so it’s no wonder that this place is a little slice of heaven.

Intimate, casual, speakeasy, local? Chucs cafe is the one. We will definitely be back for brunch and think this a bespoke chain that’s going places.
