Domaine de Verchant, Montpelier, a most Luxurious Château

June 19, 2017

I don’t really want to share my experience at Domaine de Verchant in Montpelier, but it is my job to, and why do I not?  Because I selfishly want to keep this unique château experience to myself, it’s seriously the most relaxing, spectacularly French and superb boutique hotel I’ve ever stayed in.

A short flight from any UK airport to Montpelier in France, a mere 90 minutes and a short ten minute drive from the small and efficient Montpelier airport, our 06:30am flight enabled us to be by the pool just in time for a mid morning glass of rosé, Heaven, and we all know it’s never too early in France for a chilled glass of vino.

A tree lined avenue lead to the château, not an imposing building, but impressive in a romantic picture card kind of way, pretty.

Now just a little bit of background story for the château – Chantel and Pierre Mestre fell in love with the historical region of Domaine de Verchant in 2002, also with the run down château, out houses and vineyards, they spent the following five years lovingly restoring it to an extremely high standard, taking care to remain authentic, but with a huge amount of luxury.

The château is situated on the edge of Montpelier and is just a scenic 15 minute drive from the beautiful beaches and surrounded by 13 hectares of regenerated and productive vineyards.

The château comprises of 26 rooms and suites thoughtfully designed by Raymond Morel a renowned architect. Morel has created a tranquil and stylish escape, which not only includes two fabulous restaurants,  a business/wedding venue, wine cellars, a stunning outdoor infinity pool and a stunning spa and fitness centre with state-of-the-art equipment.

We were particularly exhausted having just relaunched our Luxuria Lifestyle digital magazine and newsletter, so ideally we just wanted a couple of days relaxation in the sun and that is exactly what we had. The pool area was chic and contemporary, with the best sun loungers we’ve ever sunned our tired bodies on, huge and deep with soft fluffy purple towels, and with a little touch of a button a friendly member of staff would appear to take our order, ice cold water, a cocktail or lunch, never too much trouble. We were going to enjoy lunch poolside, but decided to dress a little more appropriately, we were in France after all, and we dined in the restaurant by the pool – ‘La Plage dans les Vignes’, a new addition just last year. The clientele were smart and hip, not a flipflop in sight, we all enjoyed our light lunchtime bites, wine and coffee, it set us up nicely for a few more hours relaxing by the pool, enjoying the typically French vista of vineyards and pines. The cuisine in this smart restaurant was delicious and beautifully presented, and the menu exciting.

Now we were perfectly set up for a snooze by the pool, the sun was shining and the company was super, we were enjoying the view of the vineyards and we were feeling completely relaxed. But time flies when you’re lying around doing nothing doesn’t it?

Just before retreating to our lovely suite we enjoyed a cocktail and chatted with the other guests, who it turns out were doing exactly the same as us, relishing in the peace and quiet and indulging in the gastronomy and superb wine.

Now it was time to return to our room, it was large and airy, thoughtfully designed with a stunning bathroom with all of the usual goodies, soft snowy white towels and fabulous artwork and artefacts, the only thing missing in our room was a balcony, but some of the rooms have lovely terraces with honeysuckle to tease your senses.

Following our afternoon rest we decided it was time to ready ourselves for the dinner in the ‘Restaurant Verchant’, we knew this was going to be a delicious experience, second to none, but before dinner we took ourselves on a gentle stroll around the grounds to build up an appetite. We explored some of the surrounding 13 hectares of vineyards, the grounds were perfectly manicured and feature a vast variety of grapes. We found the wine tasting cellar and shop and had we had more time would have loved to experience and taste the extensive range of wines that are available to buy, maybe next time.

Restaurant Verchant is in a stunning setting with wonderful views of the outdoor pool and grounds, the skills and creativity of chef Damien Cousseau will leave you breathless, the menu is imaginative and inspiring. You may choose from the seasonal menus created by the chef, where the emphasis is on regional produce and enhanced by a warm, intimate atmosphere, the presentation is delicate and elegant and the flavours delectable.

The following morning we had treatments in the spa booked and we couldn’t wait. The spa features a garden-level indoor pool equipped with a countercurrent swim system, experience showers, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, three saunas and a relaxation room, perfect for even more relaxation after your treatment. The spa eminates refreshing aromas to offer your senses a journey designed to enhance your wellbeing. The eight treatment rooms and duo treatment rooms are sumptuous and calming, but a spa is only as good as it’s therapists, we experienced perfect massages with well informed therapists.

Domaine de Verchant has a 400 sq meters gym with the latest generation Technogym equipment and the expertise of a personal trainer to guide you, for those feeling a tad more energetic, or possibly a touch guilty!

The Domaine de Verchant  also has two lounges on offer inside the hotel for groups of up to 30 people, for meetings or executive seminars, with the option of privatising them for business meals, but also for private lunches and dinners.

The function rooms and lounges are equipped with flip charts, video projectors, screens, Wi-Fi, modern furniture, lighting, sound systems, etc.

Domaine de Verchant is a wonderful venue, ideal for a romantic liaison, a business seminar, a wedding or a spa break.

Our stay here was all to short, we could readily have enjoyed a few more days of perfection and indulgence. To be surrounded by attentive staff, fabulous scenery, heavenly cuisine, sunshine and a stunning infinity pool…We will be returning, very very soon?
