Donnington Valley Spa Hotel genuine service, soft pillows and a warm welcome
I wanted to take my mum to Donnington Valley Spa Hotel for a birthday break and it didn’t disappoint! The location of the spa is very close to the M4 so it’s easily accessible by car. There is also a local train station in Newbury which is only a few miles away. We drove from north London and it took us about 90 minutes which was fine. If you drive past the spa and continue along the quiet roads you arrive into the lovely affluent looking area of Newbury. We went for a drive around and admired some of the houses in the area before checking in at the hotel.
Upon our arrival at Donnington Valley Spa, we were impressed by the impeccable presentation of the lobby and the outside of the hotel. It was very pristine and had a stunning array of flower arrangements. We were greeted by very friendly staff who explained to us where the golf course, spa, restaurant and our room were. We had a lovely room overlooking the golf course with a queen-size bed, a living area and a large bathroom with separate bath and shower.
Once we had taken our belongings to the room we headed to the spa for our afternoon of treatments and relaxation. There had been a miscommunication with the booking of the treatments, they weren’t registered for the day we arrived. At first, I thought this was going to be an issue and I was disappointed as I had been looking forward to my massage. The staff in the spa couldn’t have been more helpful and managed to fit us in with no problems. I had the Sonoma full body massage which is exactly what I needed as my masseuse said I was very tense. Being a qualified masseuse myself I am always quite critical of the massages I receive but this one left me feeling absolutely amazing. I felt very relaxed throughout the treatment and everything was handled extremely professionally. My mum had the 60-minute back massage which included a scalp massage, she said it was one of the best she has had at a spa hotel. We both relaxed in the spa after our treatments enjoying the; relaxation room, swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The spa was clean and not too busy my only thought whilst there was the jacuzzi was a bit cold. The sauna and steam room were good sizes and we loved the warmth, our skin felt smooth and hydrated.
After a very beautiful afternoon, we went to our room to get ready for dinner. The restaurant was well presented with ambient lighting and a sophisticated atmosphere. The menu was amazing it had a range of gluten-free, vegetarian and dairy-free options. We ordered the fillet of beef carpaccio with tea-soaked raisins, radish, dolcelatte and truffle and the chase rhubarb and Bramley apple gin cured salmon with lemon and saffron curd, compressed cucumber, rhubarb crisp and quail egg to start. For our main course, we ordered the duck breast with black cherry and liquorice sauce, baby fennel and herb fondant potato, duck breast and tuna salad. For our dessert, we chose the sticky toffee pudding and apple pie. The staff in the restaurant were so attentive and all of our food was a very high standard and so impressive. We didn’t have to wait very long for each course and it all came freshly prepared and piping hot which is something I always take notice of in restaurants. After dinner, we sat and enjoyed a glass of wine in the bar area just next to the restaurant. It had a lovely luxurious and cosy feel and I think it would be a super spot in the Winter when they have the log fire roaring.
After a good night’s sleep in our queen size bed, we made our way to breakfast which was served in the same restaurant as dinner. It was a buffet of continental breakfast, full English cooked breakfast and extras such as a pancake and waffle making station. I made some waffles which were delicious, I also treated myself and enjoyed some fresh fruit and yoghurt.
Overall our stay was just perfect, the food, the service, our room, our treatments and the ambience was first class.
