Dr Lamia’s at home skincare tips

With beauty clinics remaining closed for the foreseeable future, one of the UK’s most skilled cosmetic practitioners is offering advice on how to keep looking after your skin at home.

Dr Lamia Eltohamy (MBBCH, MBCAM) is a leading aesthetics doctor with an internationally renowned reputation, attracting Royal and VIP clients to her Knightsbridge Clinic. She has the following tips to rejuvenate your complexion:

Cleansing

Whether or not you’ve left your home, I recommend washing your face first thing in the morning and especially at night to remove dirt, oil and other unwanted debris. During the day, your skin builds up bacteria, grime, and dead skin and if you don’t wash this off, you’re likely to get blocked pores and blemishes.

Washing also helps with the full absorption of skincare products. I recommend a gentle cleanser rather than only water or soothing skin peel, which often contains harsh ingredients and should only be used on the advice of a doctor.

Sunscreen and screen time

Even if I’m not going outside, I still apply Factor 50 sunscreen every morning because this protects the skin from the blue light and free radicals from laptops and mobiles, as well as the UV light coming through the windows.

When sitting at your computer, try and position your device as straight and as high up to your eye line as possible because tilting your neck can cause discomfort and wrinkles.

Facial

It’s fun to get a facial at a spa but the reality is that you can get the same smooth, bright and flushed results in the comfort of your own home. Here’s how you can feel fresh-faced in just 8 easy steps:

Remove any make-up with a gentle but effective facial wipe
Apply a cleanser all over your face and neck
Steam your face using boiled water in a large bowl, keeping your face at least 15cm away to avoid irritation. Try several two-minute sessions with a clean towel over your head
Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells, using a brush or scrub cream. Massage your skin lightly, using your fingertips
Use a toner to remove any lingering impurities
Apply an eye cream with your ring finger and tap outwards towards the cheekbone
Complete your facial by applying a moisturiser

Face mask

Treat yourself to a facial or face mask no more than once or twice a week because overdoing it will cause more harm than good.

Create your own natural face mask to brighten and moisturise stressed skin using this simple recipe:

Mix avocado, aloe vera & olive oil with a few drops of rose water and leave it to dry on the skin for almost an hour before rinsing.

Hand care

We are all washing our hands more than usual so I would suggest moisturising after each wash, ideally when the hands are slightly damp as this will increase the absorption of the cream.

Treat your hands to a mask by applying olive oil and keeping them in cotton gloves for an hour.
