Dr Nina the expert In facial sculpting with the emphasis on ‘less is more’
My skin is always something that I have taken huge pride in. From a very young age, my mum had owned several successful beauty salons and has always taught me how important it is to have an efficient skincare routine. A couple of years ago, I went through quite a large transformation and lost 13 stone in weight through diet and exercise over a period of four years, which affected my skin in more ways than I could have imagined. I lost a huge amount of fat and firmness in my skin, along with collagen, which caused my facial skin to make me look older than 28.
Having just turned 28, I of course like many other women my age had researched the effects of Botox and fillers, but turned a blind eye thinking either 1 – I’m too young, 2 – I’m going to end up having no expressions left in my face or 3 – It’s going to look incredibly obvious that I’ve decided to try aesthetics. This is where Dr Nina comes in.
Dr Nina Bal is a Cosmetic Dental Surgeon and Facial Aesthetics Doctor who, in 2008, graduated at the top of her year with distinction and gained a highly respected diploma after completing a one-year postgraduate in Cosmetic Dentistry and Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry in London.
A member of the General Dental Council, she is also a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and SaveFace (the National Register of Accredited Practitioners who provide non-surgical cosmetic treatments).
You might recognise her from TV as Dr Nina is the official cosmetic dentist in the series 2 of the UK TV Show Bodyfixers on E4. Dr Nina and her work have been featured many times in Forbes, Evening Standard, Harvard, Metro, Tatler, The Times, The Sun, Sunday Mirror, Thrive Global and Adweek just to name a few.
Dr Nina is the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards 2018 Winner in the Facial Aesthetics category – Full Facial Treatment and was a finalist in the Facial Aesthetics – Dermal Fillers category in 2019. In 2017 she was shortlisted as one of the best young dentists in the UK by the highly prestigious Dental Awards.
Dr Nina is passionate about enhancing a patient’s inner beauty. Her philosophy is ‘less is more’ and she loves to make subtle aesthetic tweaks that lead to excellent, yet natural results.
Dr Nina owns two clinics in the heart of London, one in Devonshire Square, just off of the famous Harley Street and the other in Chelsea on the Kings Road. Both clinics are minimally designed giving a professional, modern and medical décor, yet with a warm, welcoming and non-intimidating ethos, which as a first-time experience was very reassuring.
After sitting with Dr Nina and having a 40 minute consultation prior to deciding upon a final treatment plan, we discussed treatment options, what happens to your skin when having lost weight, what each treatment option does and how it would benefit me and the products that would suit my needs following my treatment to help maintain the aesthetic benefits. Believing in Dr Nina’s motto that ‘less is more’ and also seeing the work that she performs on herself, made me feel very comfortable that the outcome of the treatment would be incredibly natural and simply make me look refreshed.
I, of course, took Dr Nina’s recommendations, after all, she is a facial sculpting expert, as to what she believed would work best for me and we agreed that I would have Botox in three different areas – in my forehead to raise my brows, around my eyes on my crows feet and between brows to relax my ‘worry lines’. I also had 1ml of filler in my smile lines, to soften my nasal folds which were made heavier by losing fat in my face. Dr Nina uses only 100% pure Botox from Allergan and 100% pure Azzalure from Galderma, with no substitutes or generics. She also uses Pediatric 32 gauge needles, the smallest needles available, which cause minimal pain and bruising.
Before the Botox and filler were injected numbing cream was applied for 15 minutes to make the treatment as seamless and painless as possible and boy did it do just that. Using a white marker, Dr Nina drew marks in the areas she would inject, all whilst I smiled as big as I could to show my lines that are not there when my face is relaxed, frowned and raised my eyebrows as high as possible, so Nina could see my lines at their worst.
After a quick five minutes of both treatments, I was informed that the worry lines on my forehead had softened already, but would further soften within 3 -5 days as it needs time to reach and relax the muscles in the surrounding area. However, the filler is immediate and after spreading the filler along the nasal folds with a few minutes massaging the smile lines, I could instantly see how much softer they were and how much younger my face looked. My cheekbones had lifted slightly and the apple of my cheek had become a little fuller, making my skin and bone structure appear more youthful than I could have imagined.
My experience and visit to Dr Nina was stress-free and better than I could have hoped for. Understanding my concerns and that I didn’t want the results to make me look frozen was incredibly important to me after having seen so many celebrities eradicate all their wrinkles and lines to look as young as possible. The treatment was as painless as the consultation and honestly with my hand on my heart I can say Dr Nina is one of the sweetest yet most professional, knowledgeable and reassuring doctors I have ever met. My first time trying something so foreign and almost poorly thought of in so many’s opinions has beautifully changed something that was so worrying to me for a long time.
