Right in the heart of London, in between the luxurious Mayfair and the luscious greens of Hyde Park, lies one of the most prestigious hotels in Western Europe.

Since 1929, JW Marriott Grosvenor House has infused a touch of glamour into Mayfair as the first Hotel on Park Lane.

With 496 rooms across eight floors, multiple restaurant facilities and event spaces (including the Great Room- the UK’s largest hotel ballroom seats up to 2000 guests), JW Marriot Grosvenor House is the embodiment of luxury meeting British elegance.

A truly iconic London property that holds one of the capital’s most desirable addresses for significant events, hosting Royalty (Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margareth learned how to skate in the ice rink that used to be in the Great Room!), dignitaries and celebrity guests for 90 years and that always strives to evolve and stay up to date with requirements of nowadays guests, including Sustainability.

In August 2018, in fact, the Hotel was awarded the ‘Gold’ standard by the ‘Green Tourism’ board, scoring 100% within the ‘Innovation’ category. With a multi-million pound renovation of the entire hotel over the past 4 years, JW Marriot Grosvenor House put sustainability and positive change at the forefront of decision-making which also included a ban on single-use plastic, adoption of eco-friendly products and other initiatives.

The hotel has also received a Green Path Award for 0% to landfill for the past two years which is incredible for a business of this scale.

My experience

It doesn’t often happen to get the chance to have a vacation in the city you live in. You can probably imagine my excitement when I got offered the opportunity of staying for one night at the world famous Grosvenor House.

Having only visited the venue for Awards ceremonies and industry events in their gorgeous ballroom, I’ve always wondered what would be like to stay at the Hotel; Spending the night here on behalf of Luxuria Lifestyle was like a dream coming true.

Walking through the doors, you can’t help but feeling almost overwhelmed by so much elegance and beauty. A corridor of golden marble floors opens in front of you, with beautiful flower arrangements and fine art, leading to the reception area.

We were welcomed by the Front of House team, who confidently and rapidly completed the check-in process and took us to their Park View Suite, our home for the night.

Once we entered the Suite, we couldn’t believe our very eyes. A master bedroom with an inviting king size bed, luxurious marble bathroom and a separate, open living area completed with a work station, flat tv screen and comfortable sittings completed by with luxury bath amenities, slippers and robes.

A revisited dècor that elevates the classical British taste and makes it effortlessly luxurious while still maintaining a familiar vibe.

After exploring every corner of our incredible Suite, we sat in the living room area to relax and unwind from the busy day. We were thrilled to find some fresh fruits and lemonade along with an incredible goodie bag (containing all sorts- from an inflight beauty kit to JW Marriott Grosvenor House branded pens and agenda) courtesy of the JW Marriot Grosvenor House PR team.

We then got ready for dinner and made it just in time to enjoy the sunset with a glass of bubbly on our very own balcony, overlooking beautiful Hyde Park.

The dinner

Once sunset was over, we headed to JW Steakhouse where the team had kindly made a reservation for us. This restaurant is renowned amongst meat lovers as it serves prime USDA select cuts, within a traditional steakhouse setting.

The restaurant has a private dining area that can accommodate up to 12 guests and it’s decorated with photos of the various celebrities that the JW Marriott Grosvenor House have welcomed over the years (including Mr. and Mrs Disney- and Mickey Mouse, of course- for their honeymoon). It also has an Al Fresco terrace, available during the spring and summer months & the notable Bourbon Bar, home to more than 300 rare, pre-prohibition, single batch bourbons.

We started our meal with two cocktails that the bartender recommended, The Lavish and Golden Liqueur, which were absolutely delicious and their famous crab-cake (the most delicious I’ve ever tried) and calamari as starters.

We then ordered two different cuts of steak (Angus Rib-eye & Porter House) with their signature Bourbon peppercorn sauce and accompanied by asparagus, creamy mash and potatoes au gratin. The steaks were cooked to perfection, melting in your mouth, and the sides complimented the meat perfectly.

Even though we hardly had room for the dessert, our host Alejandro insisted we tried their cheesecake as it’s said to be the best across this side of Europe. I must admit that I was sceptic at the beginning, but I immediately changed my mind as soon as I took the first spoonful.

This creamy and luxurious dessert is on another level (unfortunately the whole recipe is top-secret) and definitely not your average cheesecake. The Hotel kitchens make thousands per day and it’s sold not only in the JW Steakhouse but also in the Hotel’s Cafe, lounges and Park Room (where afternoon tea is served). People queue up for hours during warm summer nights and Sean Penn described their cheesecake as ‘a religion’. Do you need any more reasons to come down and try it yourself?

After dessert, we had the opportunity to talk to Robert, the Bourbon expert, who gave us a tour of the bar and made us try their signature Bourbon, an 11 years old single barrel Jim Beam which is exclusively available to JW Marriot & Steakhouse guests.

Once again, the JW Marriot group didn’t fail to deliver a luxurious yet approachable experience by ensuring a friendly and knowledgeable service with an impressive quality of food.

The morning after

After an incredible but filling dinner, we decided to hit their Fitness Lounge before having breakfast. The room is perfect for everyone’s needs, with a full set of cardio machines, weights & stretching area and water, towels as well as headphones available for all guests.

Once we completed the workout, it was time to ask for their 24 hrs room service (as recommended by the Receptionist) and ordered a Continental Breakfast along with a French Toast and a variety of juices to start the day with the right foot.

Our breakfast was ready in less than half an hour and everything was nicely presented and absolutely delicious.

Once breakfast was over, we had time for a couple of quick emails (the Super-Fast Wifi coming in hand) before we (sadly) headed to check-out and meet with Hilary and Katherine, who had arranged this incredible experience for us, for one last coffee in the beautiful Park Room.

This beautiful area of the hotel is were their famous ‘Anna’s Afternoon Tea’ is served. The theme, which also extends to the rest of  JW Marriott Grosvenor House (including the rooms), is meant to bring back the beauty and elegance of Hyde Park to the Hotel from the furniture to the carpet and textiles floral patterns as well as the choice of flowers displayed in the corridors and halls.

Hyde Park had also a strong influence on some of the products served in the Park Room including their Yellow Rose tea (only available in ) and their Serpentine Gin, distilled in-house, which not only takes the name from the famous lake but also the herbs that are present in the park including thyme and rosemary.

Once the coffee was finished, it was time to say goodbye to this beautiful Hotel and their wonderful team (not before they stocked us with some more cheesecake!).

If JW Marriot’s mission it to provide a familiar and approachable version of luxury to their guests, they absolutely succeeded with us and we truly hope we will have one more chance to enjoy their incredible hospitality in the future.
