Kuku Riku, succulent delicious tasty rotisserie chicken
It’s so easy to on these cold, wet and windy evenings to stay snuggled up and not venture out, but sometimes we just have to take the bull by the horns and say ‘yes’!
An invitation came through to dine at Kuku Riku in Camden, a new restaurant offering mainly chicken, but not just any old chicken, it is fresh, without additives or antibiotics and marinated for 24 hours in fresh garlic, rosemary, and extra virgin olive oil, sounds absolutely divine doesn’t it? The chickens are then put into a special french rotisserie oven until they are brown, juicy, and grilled to perfection, and when you think you’ve enjoyed really great chicken, maybe as your mum would roast on a Sunday, you haven’t tasted anything like Kuku Riku rotisserie chicken.
We began with some very meaty chicken wings, served with a garlic and lemon mayonnaise, the skin was delicious and the chicken amazing, we had a little break and then ordered our main course. The menu is very simple, it’s chicken or chicken! But there a plenty of sides to add to your chosen dish, so perfect for vegetarians too, I decided on a quarter of chicken with three times cooked chips and char grilled corn on the cob, my husband chose the chicken burger, served in a brioche bun and including fries, we could have had grilled mediterranean vegetables, legumes and roasted vegetables salad, fresh market vegetable salad or a spicy cabbage and dried blueberries salad. The dishes were all colourful and flavoursome. The service speedy and attentive, and the crockery rustic, going well with the decor of the restaurant.
Dessert was gorgeous, a hot brownie presented with creme fraiche and strawberries, heavenly.
It was very very cold outside, but inside was warm and welcoming, the exposed brick walls and utilitarian fitments made for a great atmosphere, the lighting was perfect and the ceiling heaters were a most welcome addition.
Kuku Riku opened within Camden Market’s North Yard, which is currently undergoing a revitalisation to make it a’ go to’ for artisan and quality fine food produce and dining experiences.
The idea is to create a destination that appeals to and attracts the local and London-based curious epicureans. The area is evolving and is already offering new restaurants, cafés and shops that favour locally sourced ingredients to demonstrate their culinary expertise.
Kuku Riku joins other recent exciting new additions to Camden Market’s North Yard, such as fine foods deli and cafe, The Camden Grocer (where you can find a constantly evolving selection of Great Taste Award products) and independent butcher and grill, Camden Town Roadkill who specialise in restaurant quality steak to go.
The diversity of Camden has always offered exciting venues, artistic talents and now with new culinary creativity it is becoming a truly international hotspot, well worth a visit.
