Kym’s creating favourites from all regions of China’s culinary landscape

I have been looking for a good excuse to try chef Andrew Wong’s new restaurant Kym’s located in the Bloomberg Arcade which is walking distance from Bank Station and I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to visit with my partner for dinner. The beautifully designed restaurant has a large eye-catching cherry blossom tree inside with a very stylish bar surrounding this centrepiece, the rest of the decor has a very modern but traditional look which really sets a great atmosphere. The open kitchen area has a display of roast ducks hanging on the hooks, we thought this was a great authentic touch, reminding us of our walks through Chinatown.

This being our first visit to Kym’s we were really excited to try the new menu, our waitress was really friendly and took the time to go through the menu and recommend some favourite dishes, while we checked out of our fellow guests’ choices. The menu is designed so you can try various dishes as they come in small plates which is excellent when everything sounds so fabulous and you fancy trying a bit of everything. The drinks menu also has a superb choice of red and white wines as well as cocktails from classics to some specially created for Kym’s.

Once we received our drinks we began choosing a few small plates, we started with Salt & Pepper Soft Shell Crab Fritters, Hunannese Cumin Lamb Ribs, Spring Rolls made with Mung Bean Noodles, Shiitake and Beansprouts, Crispy Prawn Rolls all which accompanied with some delicious sauces. We thought we may have ordered too much but the small plates were perfectly sized allowing us to sample a great variety of dishes. The small plates really packed a lot of flavours and tasted amazing but the Hunannese cumin lamb ribs really stood out from the rest, it was all presented and cooked to perfection.

From the sharing plates, we ordered the Crispy Duck with pancakes and plum sauce, this plate was one of the dishes we were really excited to try, a classic Chinese dish, and I am a big fan of crispy duck and pancakes, Kym’s didn’t disappoint before the dish was served the chef brought the duck to our table to shred it in readiness for the fresh pancakes, sharp plum sauces, cucumber and spring onions.  The pancake rolls were fresh with exactly the right amount of crispness.

The final dishes on the menu were listed under ‘classics’, I ordered the Steamed Sea Bass which arrived with garlic, spring onions and a double deluxe soy, my partner tried the Three Treasure, an exciting selection of Crispy Pork Belly, Soy Chicken and Iberico Pork Char Sui, for the sides we chose stir-fried Chinese Pak Choi and steamed Jasmine rice. Again everything was full of flavour but the dish that really stood out for us was the steamed sea bass, the presentation of the dish and the taste was out of this world. The broth the steamed sea bass sat on top of was just amazing, this was that dish I would return to Kym’s for.

For dessert Kym’s offer Pineapple Bun with Custard or the 888 Yuzu layered cake, we couldn’t quite fit dessert in sadly, having gone a little crazy on the main courses, but the intention to make space for them will definitely be there on our next visit to Kym’s.

Overall our experience at Kym’s was excellent with an amazing menu providing so many choices of Chinese dishes all packed full of flavour, beautifully presented and with fabulous service. Kym’s is the perfect choice for a romantic date night, for a group of friends or family, for a celebration or simply a spontaneous treat.
