La Poule au Pot – a Little Bit of France in Belgravia
August 3, 2018
In the heart of Belgravia, situated in prime position is a traditional romantic and extremely chic French restaurant, and it has stood the test of time, due mainly to it’s superb ever evolving menu, fabulous décor and extremely professional friendly and knowledgable waiting staff.
On a beautifully sunny Summer day a few weeks ago, my husband and I were lucky enough to secure an outside table at lunchtime. The weather was just perfect for al fresco dining, our table was perfectly positioned for people watching in this classy part of our capital city, London. Equally my fellow diners were just as fascinating, and it was obvious there were a lot of regular locals, and I’m sure they feel really quite smug, knowing this is their local dining venue.
It took us an absolute age to choose from the menu, as there were so many delicious dishes to decide upon. My real favourite La Soupe de Poisson that I’ve enjoyed in southern France on many occasions, was just one dilemma, La Salade de Crabe looked tempting on another table, but I chose Les Asperges with melted butter and hollandaise sauce, it was probably the most tasty starter I’ve had in a long time, the sauce was just rich enough and the asparagus fresh and crisp. My husband decided on a typically Parisian starter La Soup à L’oignon, full of soft sweet onion and delicious melted cheese, perfect for dunking the homemade bread in. These dishes were quite filling, so we asked for a little break to enjoy our bottle of fabulous French rosé wine, it went down well on this fine Summer day.
Eventually I chose L’escalope de veau aux champignons, the mushroom sauce was rich and creamy and the veal perfectly prepared and seasoned, was accompanied with seasonal vegetables and new potatoes, cooked French style. My husband was deciding between Le carré d’agneau à l’ail with garlic and L’entrecôte de boeuf with pepper sauce, but as soon as he saw it on the table next to us being enjoyed the steak was just to much of a draw, it was so succulent and tender and the pepper sauce, well peppery and creamy. This was a veritable feast for us at lunchtime, but we loved every minute of it, it was such a treat, so we indulged further and shared a pudding. We then thought better of it and went for a selection of sorbets and La Mousse au Chocolat. The perfect end to such a special lunchtime, and on a work day!
La Poule au Pot has a relaxed ambience, a fabulous menu, discreet waiting staff. The inside decor is rustic and romantic and would be a wonderful restaurant to book a celebratory meal for, but al fresco is just gorgeous, the locals are lucky to have this on their doorstep, and we were just as fortunate to have experience such a superb spot, we will be returning, soon.
