Love Love! Wimbledon Themed Afternoon Tea at Royal Horseguards

July 6, 2017

I hold certain expectations that define my idea of a perfect English summer.  If these expectations can be combined in one unique and tasty dining experience, better still with some sporting inspiration, you are onto a winner.

Few things can be considered truly more British than cucumber sandwiches and tennis – so does afternoon tea with a Wimbledon twist at the Royal Horseguards Hotel in south west London do anything for you?  Well it certainly did for a friend and me!

After being seated by a suitably smart waiter, a splendid tower of inventive tennis themed treats arrived, presented beautifully over three tiers, and we thought best to tackle each tier as if a tennis set.

Royal Horseguards Wimbledon Afternoon Tea

First serve, first set.  We were presented with an assortment of the freshest and most colourful finger sandwiches I have ever seen.  The cucumber sandwich – the colour of a perfect lawn, was a surprising favourite among the selection of traditional and contemporary classics which also included the smoked salmon and dill, the crayfish crouton, the ham and mustard… I think you get the idea.

Second serve, first set.  We couldn’t help ourselves, we had to tackle another round of those delicious sandwiches before turning to the next set of goodies.

The real ingenuity of the chefs lay in creating delicate but rich cake delights.  All paying homage to old fashioned summers and good sport.  A chocolate tennis court, Pimms almondine, and a macaron that looked more like a tennis ball, were all served with sumptuous blackberries, raspberries and strawberries before we moved onto the final tier of the scones.

Royal Horseguards Hotel really served an ace with this delightful afternoon treat.  Three sets – or tiers later – with the cursory refreshment break between each game of a sip of Taittinger or Earl Grey, this gloriously inventive feast came to a close with an odd result for tennis, but not for afternoon tea.  No Faults were served, score:  Love Love!

Wimbledon themed afternoon tea will be served at the Royal Horseguards Hotel, 2 Whitehall Court until 16th July.

Priced at £39 per person and £10 per glass of Taittinger.  #gamesetmatch
