Mason Elephant Experience, where living meets luxury
March 15, 2019
The Mason Elephant Lodge provides guests with the world-exclusive opportunity to get up close, personal, and spend a night in luxury among Bali’s largest herd of critically-endangered Sumatran elephants. Discover one of the world’s most unique hotels and the 2018 World Luxury Hotel Awards Asia Winner for Best Luxury Lodge and Global Winner for Best Luxury Eco Safari Lodge.
This 5-star boutique lodge of 27 rooms has a variety of different accommodation types to suit any taste, each with their own distinctive elephant touches, and comes with everything a discerning guest would expect, as well as providing the only experience in the world where you can hop onto an ‘elephant chauffeur’ from your front door and be whisked away to dinner or into the jungle.
The lodge is situated within the Mason Elephant Park, where guests are amongst the herd, watching and interacting with them as they go about their daily lives. Initiated in 1997 and set within the misty hinterlands of Ubud, the park was created in response to the devastating situation in Sumatra where rampant deforestation and poaching has dwindled the native elephant population.
This multi-award winning park is Bali’s only dedicated elephant rescue facility and home to 31 critically-endangered Sumatran elephants, 4 of which were born at the park. The park provides guests with the rare opportunity to interact and learn about these majestic creatures, all the while giving them a comfortable and safe environment to call home.
From the very beginning, the Mason Elephant Park has never condoned the use of brutal or cruel training methods, as all training done has strictly been by repetition, reward and patience, and the park upholds its policy of instant dismissal of any staff member mistreating any of these gentle giants. The park is committed to conservation and here you can see that they are well cared for in a healthy and stimulating environment that caters to all their daily needs, as well as providing constant care, 24/7 veterinary services, and are provided with the correct healthy diet and vitamins daily.
Elephant rides are on specially-designed light teak wood seats that are heavily padded and divert weight away from the spine causing no discomfort or injury to the elephant’s back. As well as their daily interactions with each other and guests, riding an elephant actually helps by providing necessary exercise for muscles, bone density, foot health and overall wellbeing.
The entire park is set in 4 hectares and has been carefully landscaped to mimic the original environment of the elephant’s original habitat of their native Sumatra. The location in central Bali was also chosen for its cooler climate and lush environment, which helps keep the area’s latest large locals cool and comfortable in this tranquil landscape.
For the entirety of their stay, all guests staying at the lodge have free-roaming access across the park to learn, get up close, observe, and hand-feed the elephants, as well as the option to either hose down and wash, bathe in the lake, or go for a ride in the neighboring jungle.
Every stay at the Mason Elephant Lodge is an experience like no other, as there’s nothing quite like arising to the sights and sounds of the gentlest of giants, deep in the heart of Bali.
