Raising the Steaks at Bar + Block

January 22, 2017

If you’re a fan of high quality steak, head to Bar + Block, the latest arrival to London’s steakhouse scene in King’s Cross.  We visited on a cold weekday evening, with grumbling tummy’s, raring to tuck into a juicy steak.

As we walked into the restaurant, I felt as if I was right back home in the USA.  Featuring cosy red leather booths, retro chairs and a marble-topped Chef’s Table, Bar + Block is perfect for pulling up a stool, grabbing a drink and watching the Chef at work.  There is also a grand bar area, ideal for after work libations and catching up with friends.  I also loved the added touch of the neon cow ‘taste map’ on the wall.

We took our seat and relaxed over a bottle of wine as we ordered a Stone-baked flatbread topped with pulled beef brisket, chargrilled red peppers, Cheddar cheese and rocket to share.  The beef brisket was tender and juicy and full of flavour – my dining companion and I were both raving about how savoury and delicious it was.  It was the perfect sharing dish to kick off our dinner with.

While the sharers and snacks all sound delectable – the steaks are the highlight at Bar + Block.  Sourced from the Pampas in South America, then dry aged for a minimum of 28 days, Bar + Block’s steaks are the real deal.  There are several cuts to choose from including rump rib eye, sirloin, fillet, or their signature spiral cut fillet, all hand-cut and cooked to order.  No matter your steak style, you’ll find a juicy and delicious steak on the menu to satisfy your craving. If you’re like me, and want something a little different, go for the Butcher’s Block – featuring a special of the day.  I decided on the Beef Short Rib served on a solid wooden block with chimmichuri  sauce and salty beef dripping chunky chips.

The Beef Short Rib didn’t disappoint – the meat was incredibly tender and fell right off the bone.  The Short Rib was packed with flavour, and had a subtle smokey flavour that tasted delicious.  Make sure you come hungry, because the portions are huge!

My dining companion went for a more unique dish on the menu – the Spiral Cut Steak.  This special steak is created by spiral cutting a piece of Fillet into a long rectangular steak – perfect for drawing in marinades, making it super tender and flavoursome.  I’ve got to say, I had a bite of this steak and it was one of the best I’ve had in London.  Cooked medium rare, this steak tastes delicious with a bernaise sauce but it’s so flavourful, it is perfectly fine on its own!  I was genuinely impressed at how scrumptious this cut of meat was – I would definitely come back just for this steak alone.

Full and utterly satiated, we didn’t think we could fit in any dessert until we saw our neighbours next to us order the incredible Churro Sunday.  We decided that our diets would start the next day and went for the Churros coated in cinnamon sugar, served with vanilla and chocolate ice cream, brownie chunks, biscuit bites, clotted cream and chocolate toffee sauce.  Wow.  Talk about ending dinner on a sweet note!  We loved every last bite.

Bar + Block is a fantastic restaurant and bar that serves up some seriously delicious steaks in London in a super relaxed and fun setting.  We loved the vibe and the service was impeccable too.  We will definitely be returning to try more of their cuts (and to indulge in more of their fabulous desserts!)
