Red Rooster: Fried Chicken & Soul All Night Long

What do you call a chicken that goes on a safari? An eggs-plorer
Well, that’s exactly what I went to sample over at the edgy Red Rooster Shoreditch. Did you know Red Rooster has a twin in NY Harlem, and similar to its sibling the Shoreditch Branch gives off the same hip yet trendy meets rustic soul kinda vibes!
We jumped straight into the waffles and fried chicken (after hearing so much about the sauce), there was absolutely no way we could resist. Whilst we settled down to await our starters, we decided on a tempting sharing cocktail, the “Harlem Special”, a tantalizing team sharing tipple that hosted some very fine ingredients: Hennessy vs, Jack Daniels, rye, maraschino, cranberry, triple sec, lemon, Veuve Clicquot yellow label. The sharing cocktail gave us 3.5 drinks each and although the cranberry overpowered some of the other flavours, the cocktail was the perfect way to kick-off a Friday evening.
Just as we started to tuck into our food, the act of the night came on…The Soca Divettes – wow! These highly talented ladies we found out are backing singers for The Association of British Calypsonians. They had such enthusiasm and were an incredibly unique dynamic vocal trio who played with the full live band. A mix of Soca, Reggae & Calypso – it was delightful.
Onto the main course, we had Bird Royal and Jerk Chicken – we were advised these were Red Roosters signature dishes and couldn’t wait to sink our teeth into them.
Both arrived fairly fast and the portion size was second to none that I’ve seen in London, we could have had one main between us! Although the size was brilliant and the rice and the sauce were delicious, the chicken itself didn’t have much flavour – because there was a lot of it, I was hoping for slightly more flavour to add to the fantastic fried chicken texture.
However, after a good rest period in between, we went onto desserts and were blown away. The coconut panna cotta finished with caramelised pineapple and tangy passion fruit sorbet was a winner from the get-go. Even though I was very full from the main course, I could have eaten another two of those. The flavour matching was incredible and the dessert was light and fresh. Alongside that, we ordered the strawberry tart which came with chantilly cream and a delicate white chocolate crumb…. It was divine.
The desserts and incredible live music atmosphere alone would bring us dancing back into Red Rooster in the future.
We also have to thank the staff throughout, who’s advance knowledge and insight into the menu proved to be extremely helpful throughout the whole evening that we spent there.
If you’re looking for Harlem vibes and some real soul food in the heart of Shoreditch, Red Rooster is the one for you! With Sunday brunch on the menu and live music most evenings, this is one chicken hotspot not to be missed!
