Romulo Café London a warm friendly restaurant featuring delicious Philippine cuisine

We had endured a tough day of meetings, running from one side of London to the other, several times, we were tired and hungry, but as we walked into Romulo in High Street Kensington the stresses of the day dissolved.

We were greeted by the lovely owners Rowena and Chris Romulo and taken to a great table tucked away in a comfortable corner and immediately offered an Imelda Marcos cocktail in a china shoe, a signature and rather delicious cocktail.

It didn’t take long for us to feel completely at home, the interior is classic with contemporary elements, the restaurant was created by an award-winning design agency, using lime green and crisp black and white, the lighting is soft and flattering. The interior walls are offset by beautifully reframed historic photos and documents featuring Rowena’s Pulitzer Prize-winning grandfather, the late General Carlos P. Romulo, who was the influence for all of the family’s restaurants and helps to further enhance the family feel you have as you enter the restaurant.

With cocktail and menu in hand, we made our choices with the help of Chris and his expert knowledge, he recommended that the Romulo Classic Platitos is a great way to start the meal (smaller sharing platters), we chose four with a rice or noodle dish. We opted for one each of king prawns, chicken, beef and pork. The presentation was as special as the flavours, the influence of Malaysia, China, America and Spain create deliciously flavoursome dishes.  If you have room following this selection of starters, my recommendation would be to maybe just have a couple between two if you want to have a main dish, Platos, which are quite large and ideal to share. We struggled to fit in any more but really wanted to share the Scottish Salmon Tamarind which is a salmon fillet with morning glory, okra, daikon and aubergine in a savoury tart with tamarind flavoured stew, it was absolutely amazing, we chose a noodle dish to accompany it and we were not disappointed.

After a short digestive break we chose our desserts, yam cheesecake and banana fritters, the perfect end to a fabulous evening of exquisite dining, great service in a beautifully presented restaurant in a homely relaxed atmosphere.
