Snowboxx Festival, Avoriaz – The Most Fun You Can Have In The Mountains

April 5, 2017

Surrounded by great friends, with the sun beating down, a breathtaking backdrop and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man belting out ‘Human’ across the mountain tops, it’s pretty hard to think of anywhere I’d rather be.  Welcome to Snowboxx – the annual dance festival which has been hitting Avoriaz hard every March for the past 5 years.  This, is the most fun you can have in the mountains.

With beats booming out across the slopes, parties held in igloos and dance dj’s on massive stages (Wilkinson killed it), basically if you love music and skiing, this is the perfect holiday mix.

Basement Jaxx were this year’s big name act for dance fans, while Rag ‘n’ Bone Man’s epic set (which even though was on a stage, felt more like an intimate gig when you’re that high up), was just perfect for a mid-afternoon après stop before bombing back down the slopes for an adrenalin-fueled ski and a jaeger (or five).

Snowboxx’s antics more than a 1000 metres up will warm your cockles for a whole two weeks and this year attracted 4500 people – they’re biggest turnout yet.  Think you’re up to it?!  Then take on the whole hardcore itinerary!  We managed just four party-hard/ski-hard days with one of the highlights the TQD Igloo Party in the middle of a storm (super cool), sledge races, daily Rock the Piste live acts, Bottomless Brunch at Le Lodge, and the Skim Pool Challenge.  Not sure what that is?!  We weren’t either until we saw snow fanatics in fancy-dress hurtling down a steep slope and escaping an icy pool by the skin of their teeth as they skimmed across it (well apart from an unlucky few who ended up getting pretty soaked!).  Then in the Après Village each evening, there’s extra entertainment in the form of some pretty big nights out in the awesome XX Club and the packed out Globetrotters Bar among others.

There’s plenty of places to line your stomachs pre-jaegerbombs too – our favourites included the best fondue ever at La Cabane and delicious juicy steaks washed down with warming red wines at the 155 Steak House in the heart of the village.

Amara Apartments

For a luxury twist on the festival antics, you’re gonna need some swank in the form of L’Amara Apartments which can be booked through Pierres and Vacances.  With the nearest ski run literally on your doorstep and Insta-worthy photo opportunities from the massive balcony to make even the coolest of your mates super jel, L’Amara’s stylish modern digs (sleeping 6) include full kitchen, diner, sitting room, two bedrooms and two bathrooms (one of which is en-suite with walk-in rain shower) and a bath in the main bathroom to soothe those tired party/ski glutes.

There’s a great spa area and swimming pool to take advantage of (always good to have a nice swim in the morning and clear your head after the night before…) and the outdoor hot tub, which you can book in advance, is the perfect place to quaff a bottle of champers while you take in the amazing surroundings.

With one of the most spectacular views over the resort of Avoriaz, L’Amara Apartments really are an amazing place to stay, close to the action with luxurious facilities.

The combination of adrenalin flying down those runs (51 in total with the longest at 6k), plus the pure hedonistic party pleasure that the event delivers, combined with a crowd of snowboarders who look like they could be Men’s Health models, more than adds up to the time of your life.  Yes, you’ll come back pretty broken, but the pain only lasts so long.  So addictive is Snowboxx, that you’ll be back on the website in no time wondering when you can book up for next year… (Tickets go on sale in August – you can thank us later…)
