The contemporary standing desk – Tabula Rasa Design
Working remotely at a standing desk is a thoroughly modern concept, but thanks to the latest release from Tabula Rasa Design, you can add over 300 years of history and heritage to your home office.
The TR Smart Desk is set to become a luxury home office must-have. In-keeping with Tabula Rasa Design’s signature aesthetic, this latest creation marries traditional and contemporary materials, but takes things one step further with the addition of advanced remote-activated technology.
The bespoke standing desks are handcrafted to order, with the first release created from the increasingly rare Scottish Wych Elm. This beautiful 300-year-old piece of wood was carefully hand-selected by master craftsman, Derek Annand, founder of Tabula Rasa Design, because of its distinctive grain pattern of earthy green and brown tones, caused by the minerals found in the soil in a specific region in the West of Scotland.
As a strikingly contemporary contrast, the well-engineered leg frame is made from black powder-coated steel, and the quality finish is further enhanced with thoughtful details such as the brass dovetail inlays, and the TR branded leather and brass handle on the drawer.
The hidden beauty of this piece, however, is its intelligent blend of aesthetics and ergonomics. The desk connects to an app, available on all smartphones, enabling you to raise or lower it to whatever height you require. At its lowest, the desk stands at 68cm, proudly elevating to a maximum height of 133cm thanks to the smooth-action dual electric motors – meaning you can seamlessly switch between sitting and standing whilst working.
The health benefits of standing whilst working are multiple. Studies have shown that by limiting time spent sitting sedentary at a desk and instead standing whilst you work can boost your mood, health, and productivity.
Commenting on the design of the TR Smart Desk, Derek explained; ‘The ability to set the height of this desk to suit your exact individual needs will make desk working more comfortable and consequently more productive. However, the TR Smart Desk is so much more than a highly functional piece of furniture. I chose this particular piece of wood, for instance, because of its unique tones and its individual grain pattern which has naturally formed over the centuries. It’s tactile, it’s beautiful to look at, and it’s sure to inspire anyone to get to work’.
The TR Smart Desk in Wych Elm costs £5,000. Bespoke versions can be made to measure, with custom-colour leg frames available.
