Top of the top-ups: Vagabond Paddington

Vagabond is one of the UK’s leading wine brands and already has seven locations across London, ranging from Canary Wharf to Charlotte Street. We’ve been on an exclusive wine exploration on the banks of the Grand Union Canal in one of London’s most anticipated eatery and drink destinations, Paddington Central.

So, you think you know your independent and classic wines? Think again.

Behold the space that stores 120 different wines laid out bare for you to sample, sip and sink into at your leisure. This is the perfect spot to get tipsy with your besties, colleagues, or even partner in crime.

The ambience is a combination of Urban Library meets underground club, which actually is somewhat charming on arrival. We had the pleasure of being shown wines by a Wine Advisor (the best job ever) who with 100+ wines at their fingertips every day, look at the latest and greatest independent wines on offer. We sampled eight different recommendations and the advisors really did know their Argentinian Malbec to their French Bordeaux.

Although, the winners for me were the warm and complex blend of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alvesa fruit (exclusive to Vagabond) and utterly delightful. This 2015 Spanish wine had a dark fruit centre with black cherry and bilberry, leading to a satin-like texture with a soft vanilla freshness. Basically, low in acidity and goes with pretty much anything.

The staff really were Ambassadors for the brand and took the time to discuss the evolving choice of bi-weekly wines. The wine top-up card is a total genius, I applaud the concept because it’s extremely smart and really fun to go around and discuss. There is a quirky cultural feel to strolling around looking through the wines from across the globe when it’s pouring down outside.

A moderately-priced take-away selection was available, which enabled us to take home our winner for the evening: the delightful Vagabond Garnacha. This was a mix of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon from Carinena. As a huge fan of fruity, full-bodied wines this hit the nail on the head. The wine had a fresh acidity and didn’t cling to the palette though, which made this easily drinkable and on a rainy evening curled up on the sofa.

If you’re looking for a down to earth, cultural place to visit with the knowledgeable friendly staff or fancy yourself a wine connoisseur, take a trip to Vagabond, you will not be disappointed.
