Trader Vics – Taste The World
April 25, 2019
Recently I visited Trader Vics, a Polynesian hideaway that serves French Polynesian inspired cuisine and is situated in the world famous London Hilton on Park Lane and first opened in 1963. It was London’s first Polynesian themed restaurant and I was excited to try their new menu, having last been there many years before and remembered fondly the great time that was had there.
Walking down the beautiful spiral staircase I could hear the samba disco music and could feel the great atmosphere even before entering the restaurant, where Tiki carvings and trappings from around the world adorned the walls not to mention the aboriginal-esque prints and sculptures, and ocean-themed trinkets. It was a Wednesday evening and considering it was mid week it was nice and buzzy without being too full.
Our waitress was very attentive and knowledgable and made some great suggestions. My guest and I ordered The Original “Cosmo Tidbits” to start The Trader’s most popular sampler pupu platter Crispy prawns, crab Rangoon, Char Siu pork, BBQ spare ribs for two. It was all flavoursome and we devoured every last mouthful.
For the main I ordered the Scottish grilled lobster, which was a very generous portion and succulent and delicious and my guest ordered the Indonesian spiced rack of lamb with Singapore noodles, grilled pineapple and peanut butter sauce, which I quote was “cooked to perfection” The chunky Harissa sweet potato fries were also definitely a winner.
Sadly there was no room for dessert as the starter and mains were such generous sized portions, however the fried banana fritters, which is a crispy tempura fried banana dish finished with Malacca sauce and crème Chantilly and Chocolate Lava Cake served warm with liquid ganache centre, crème Chantilly and caramel sauce sounded and looked extremely tempting and are on my list to try the next time I visit.
The vast cocktail menu of over 60, many of which are exclusive to Trader Vics, ranging from a Peach Tree Punch to a Hula Girl , being London’s home to the original Mai Tai cocktail of course I had to sample that and it was indeed as good as I had anticipated!
I would definitely recommend Trader Vics for those looking for delicious food , a great choice of cocktails and a fun atmosphere and music where you can let your hair down and not take yourself too seriously.
