Burleigh Court, The Cotswolds – A rural hidden gem

Looking for Downton Abbey vibes in a stunning rural setting? Look no further than Burleigh Court, the boutique hideaway hotel with a 2 AA rosette restaurant near The Cotswolds.

Firmly set in the heart of nature, and the rolling hills, there’s no doubt that Burleigh Court is the perfect location for a wedding, birthday or major milestone and the ambience reflects this too.

The rooms are well thought out, individually designed with an old-world charm and cosy atmosphere. If you’re looking to splash out make sure you pick a superior room which features nature-inspired heritage colours and textures with large bay windows offering stunning views over the gardens or the Golden Valley.

The restaurant’s menu has a modern take on Cotswolds food, using the best sourced local ingredients, wild meats as well as kitchen-garden foraged produce, and the food looks as stunning as it tastes. With three courses priced at just £45, it’s well worth it too. Especially when you’re used to dining in big cities, this nestled nature break knows what it’s talking about.

So, what was on the menu?

To start with sous vide pigs Cheek, ham hock bonbon, burnt apple puree, tomato and swede chutney – melt in the mouth. Followed by a tantalising duck main with smooth and delicate sauces on the palette to accompany this.

This was followed by a Cornflake Panna Cotta Strawberry consommé, meringue, and maple syrup ice cream. This can be complemented by Moscato d’Asti if requested (highly recommended), the flavours melt together.

But by far my favourite thing to eat throughout the stay was the Burleigh Court honey, which is absolutely incredible! I’d have bought several cases back with me if they hadn’t sold out!

The wine is a great edition from sustainability-conscious Burleigh as they actively aim to lower their carbon footprint by reducing wine suppliers from non-European producers as well as serving wines from smaller, boutique producers, including organic, biodynamic, and vegan wines.

I’d like to personally praise Head Chef Shaun Jones who made the dining experience excellent, along with Mhairi who made the experience so very welcoming.

As part of the Burleigh Court experience, it’s well worth booking a ‘Learn to Kitchen Garden’ Foraging tour with Expert Emanuelle.

She grows herbs, salads, and vegetables in the Burleigh grounds which are provided to the restaurant to be incorporated into a range of dishes and cocktails and she’s extremely personable when taking you on a tasting tour!

During your tour, you get to go through edible plant species allowing you to come away with fresh ideas for turning foraged bounty into scrumptious meals. The experience includes discussion around seasonal eating as well as insight into the nutritional values and medicinal use of plants.

But there’s so much more that you can do! From wine tasting to pizza patio nights… or a night in the beautiful rooms and a hot bath!

Stays are priced from £139 per night for a room only. Dinner, bed and breakfast packages are available too.
