Mussel Monger & Oyster Bar – The most succulent ocean goodies
The Mussel Monger & Oyster Bar company specialise in supplying South-Africa’s freshest and finest mussels and oysters. The oysters and mussels are sourced from Saldanha Bay and located to their store which can be found at Sea Point and Stellenbosch in the Western Cape of South-Africa.
The Mussel Monger & Oyster Bar was created in 2015 by entrepreneur Kyle Dods, on the back of his incredibly successful Sovlaking Delicious stall, with a dream to become the largest restaurant retailer of oysters and mussels in South Africa. Living in Saldanha Bay, Kyle had realised there was a massive gap in the market for premium oysters and mussels of the highest quality and that people living in and visiting the Western Cape were looking for a beautiful place to experience the best of West Coast produce. From the onset, his vision was to ensure that these two magical products of the ocean are purveyed at the highest possible standard, setting the bar for others to follow.
The first oyster bar was built at the popular Root44 Market in Stellenbosch and quickly became a must-visit stop for visitors to the market. Following this Kyle was decided to open a second branch at the Mojo Market in Sea Point, which has become one of the flagship stores of the market.
“With its pristine waters fed by the icy, nutrient-rich Benguela current, Saldanha Bay provides some of the finest growing conditions in the southern hemisphere. These conditions directly influence the flavour of our produce. To many, this natural deep-water site produces some of the best oysters and mussels in the world and is home to almost all oysters & mussels farmed in Southern Africa. Our oysters feed off the nutrient-rich tidal movements of the bay while suspended from long lines that float just below the ocean surface. The mussels naturally settle on long ropes suspended off anchored rafts. These ropes replicate kelp like depths, producing the world’s finest oysters and mussels. Tendrils descend deep into the blue, drifting freely in the ocean currents. After 12 months of mother nature performing her work, we haul our ocean harvest from the Mussel Monger provides a very luxurious service where they deliver fresh oyster and mussel to your doorstep” say Mussel Monger.
“During the COVID19 period the Mussel Monger adopted a new business model to ensure its sustainability as a company and the livelihood of our 35 crew and I was privileged enough to have experienced this unique service.
“Once a week, we are running home deliveries, directly from the ocean harvest farms in Saldanha, straight to customers door, across selected parts of the Western Cape with plans to grow into the rest of South Africa in the next few months. The deliveries take place weekly on Fridays between 9 am and 3 pm through our logistics partners PicUp” Mussel Monger.
They deliver to your house every Friday between 9 am and 3 pm with just a small fee added for the convenience of delivery.
In the delivery box received you’ll find fresh oysters and mussels with added recipes to try. They also add in a step-by-step guide as to how to perfectly peel the oyster to get the best possible experience. I poured myself an ice-cold glass of wine, opened my oysters, neatly decorated and spiced them with a little fresh lemon juice and salt and pepper, took them outside and enjoyed listening to the sea while experiencing first hand the freshness of these delicious oysters.
Highly recommended!
