Spain on a Plate: The Full Experience at El Pirata
If you fancy a taste of Spain, El Pirata in Mayfair is the spot you’re looking for, a London dining experience that’s been serving up tapas, laughter, and good times for over 25 years. We spent a superb evening there, and from the first delicious cocktail to the last bite of churros, we were completely besotted!
This restaurant hums with a Spanish vibe, lively chatter, and the sounds of laughter, coming from every table, all enveloped in an atmosphere that makes you forget you’re a stone’s throw from Hyde Park, rather than Madrid.
The People & Service
The team at El Pirata deserve a standing ovation. Every single person we met had a great personality and was genuinely happy to have us there. It’s got that “Spanish home away from home” feel, the kind where you’re treated like a long-lost friend even if it’s your first visit. Watching the staff pass between tables with plates of sizzling prawns and delicious cocktails was completely impressive.
The Food
Now, the real star: the tapas. Over 40 authentic dishes. We shared the Secreto de cerdo Ibérico (juicy Iberian pork that melts in your mouth), and the prawns in garlic & chilli sauce, spicy and succulent. Followed by the legendary Paella Marinara for two, it was bursting with fresh fish, mussels and perfectly cooked rice.. Every dish arrived as a powerhouse of flavour, a treat for the taste buds. Dessert was equally as lushious, we enjoyed the traditional churros with hot chocolate sauce, which was so indulgent and raspberry sorbet, perfect to refresh the palate.
The Wine & Drinks
The wine list ranges from crisp Albariños to rich Garnachas. There’s even a sleek glass-backed bar packed with every conceivable pre- and post-dinner alcoholic beverage. It’s the kind of place where “just one drink” easily turns into three. We began our meal with a cocktail, delivered by the resident mixologist and enjoyed a bottle of Spanish rosé with our meal, and just so we could stay a little longer, finished with a coffee!
The Décor & Vibe
Think rustic Spanish charm meets Mayfair chic, whitewashed walls, wrought iron details, colourful artwork, and that warm glow that makes everyone look a little bit softer. Downstairs, the newly refurbished Cellar is a gem: exposed brick, murals, and a relaxed atmosphere, and probably a little quieter, perfect for date nights or private gatherings. There’s even a terrace for sunny afternoons (or brave souls who dine al fresco in London’s “iffy” weather).
The Verdict
El Pirata is one of those rare restaurants that gets everything spot on: delicious food, and a buzz that’s just delightful. Whether you’re popping in for a glass of wine and a few tapas or settling in for a full evening of feasting, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve been whisked away to Spain!
¡Viva El Pirata! We’ll definitely be back.
