Groot Constantia: The Legacy of South African Wine
It takes years to build a legacy. Sometimes decades. Occasionally, centuries.
Groot Constantia stands as living proof of this truth — a testament to how one man’s passion for winemaking gave birth to South Africa’s very first wine estate in 1685.
From the very beginning, our wines have been shaped by rich African soil and crafted with care, embodying the pursuit of perfection that has endured for more than three centuries. Groot Constantia’s story is deeply woven into South Africa’s literature, culture, and national heritage — a timeless emblem of growth, life, and beauty. Vibrant and alive, like the vineyards themselves, our legacy lives in every bottle and every memory created here
Today, Groot Constantia continues to produce award-winning, world-class wines, maintaining its place as South Africa’s oldest wine-producing estate and an icon of the global wine heritage. The estate captures the essence of the country’s rich and diverse history, offering visitors a cultural, social, and sensory experience unlike any other.

A Legacy Celebrated Around the World
The story of Groot Constantia has travelled far beyond our shores. As early as the 18th century, Emperors and Kings, including Frederick the Great of Prussia and King Louis Philippe of France, sought out “Constantia Wyn” at auctions across Europe.
Our wine has inspired writers and captivated hearts — featured in Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility as a “cure for a broken heart,” in Charles Dickens’ The Mystery of Edwin Drood to “lift a character’s spirits,” and even said to have comforted Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile on St Helena.
The Spirit of Groot Constantia
More than a destination, Groot Constantia is an experience — a place where history, heritage, and craftsmanship come together in perfect harmony. Every visit tells a story. Every glass shares a legacy. And every guest becomes part of the continuing journey that began over 330 years ago.
