Evergreen Manor and Spa – Stellenbosch
Discovering Stellenbosch Beyond the Vineyards
Stellenbosch is renowned for its famous wines, wine farms, and university. Whilst all these have put the small farming town on the map, Stellenbosch offers so much more in the way of sights, stays, and activities that deserve equal attention to its wine production.
A Historic Gem: Evergreen Manor and Spa
Built in 1902 and 1904 respectively, what is now Evergreen Manor and Spa was commissioned by a woman—a rare achievement at the time. Bought and lovingly restored by the current owner, Riel Meynhardt, and his dear wife, Christina, it is evident that immense time, effort, and love have gone into every aspect of this restoration. A member of Cape Country Routes, it is essential to include Evergreen Manor as one of the stops on your Cape Country travels.
Evergreen Manor is surrounded by students, as it lies just across the road from Stellenbosch University’s campus. Yet, if no one told you, you would not notice the difference—the area remains quiet and peaceful, with students quietly passing by, respectfully maintaining the town’s beauty.
Stepping Back in Time
The glass door at the hotel’s front is deceptive, being the only modern aspect, beautifully stamped with the hotel’s logo. Beyond lies the original walkway of this former home, with original wooden floors evoking life in a historical home from the early 1900s. This ambience permeates the entire property, including the carpeted bedrooms at the top of the stairs, preserving their warmth.
As we opened the door to our bedroom, it felt as though we had stepped back in time. From the carefully chosen vintage furniture and paintings on the walls to the bathroom finishes, there was no mistaking the era. Greeted by a shot of sherry on a beautiful vintage letter desk under the window, it was as if we were living in the 1900s, escaped from the modern world just outside. Luxury and elegance are understatements, shown off most in the opulent bathroom, with its romantic taps and a bath perfect for hours of soaking.
Impeccable Service and Gastronomy
Throughout our stay, we received regular courtesy calls from front desk staff to ensure we had everything needed. This was merely the tip of the iceberg regarding the staff and owners’ royal treatment—from coffee served poolside to breakfast in the garden, one of the finest we have ever had. I am still trying to fathom how those eggs are made. Every staff member treated us like royalty, elevating the stay far beyond a mere hotel visit.
Adventure on E-Bikes in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch may be famed for wine tasting, but it boasts countless trails for hiking and biking. We were fortunate to enjoy an E-bike ride with the Adventure Shop, another Cape Country Routes member, which exceeded all expectations. The office staff ensured our comfort and safety, even calling ahead to confirm we were tall enough for the bikes. Our guides, Sav and Eon, unveiled parts of Stellenbosch we never knew existed—the rolling hills, mountains, endless views, and effortless E-bike ride make this an adventure for everyone. It is hard to capture Stellenbosch’s essence until experienced by E-bike. We rode to Postcard Café for lunch, surrounded by mountains above a serene river, followed by a sensory wine tasting at Stark-Condé. We opted to bike back, savouring the views and sights.
