The Business of NFL Player Endorsements

The National Football League remains at the pinnacle of value and notoriety compared to other rival sporting leagues. The NFL generates around $20 billion in annual revenue, enabling its star players to secure substantial income through endorsement deals and sponsorships with the world’s most prominent brands.

The NFL is a pillar of immense wealth, driven by gameday earnings, merchandise sales, major investments, and deals across industries such as broadcasting and sponsorship branding.

The league boasts an impressive roster of star players across its 32 franchises, each franchise’s value dictated by market size and fanbase.

Millions of fans tune into NFL broadcasts, allowing players to land lucrative endorsement deals with top global brands. These deals have escalated in value as the league’s revenue has grown over recent decades.

The NFL’s business model for player endorsements has evolved, enabling top names to bolster their already substantial earnings through promotions for leading brands.

How Do NFL Player Endorsements Work?

NFL players are often represented by the NFLPA (NFL Players Association) to pursue new partnerships and promotions with brands. All deals must comply with the NFLPA Partnership and Endorsement Policy to enhance the association’s services and programmes.

New sponsorships undergo NFLPA assessment to prevent misrepresentation of relationships with external entities.

During assessment, companies must follow policy guidelines and disclose potential drawbacks, such as sponsorship restrictions or logo usage.

Once approved, players can leverage their fame to promote the brand, earning significant sums in the process.

The Biggest NFL Player Endorsements Today

Active and retired NFL stars frequently secure sponsorships with major brands. One example is the collaboration between comedian Kevin Hart and former NFL QB Ryan Fitzpatrick in a DraftKings sportsbook commercial, featuring the latest Super Bowl odds ahead of the big game in Las Vegas.

Brands pitch products to NFL stars, negotiating contracts that can generate millions over several years.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes leads active players in endorsement revenue, earning an estimated $20 million career total. His deals include marquee brands like Hugo Boss, Adidas, Oakley, State Farm, T-Mobile, and Walmart, with more expected as the two-time Super Bowl winner enters his peak years.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson each earn around $13 million annually from partnerships with Nike’s Jordan Brand, Bud Light, and AT&T.

Other top earners include NY Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow, and Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, all securing millions per season from endorsements.
