Hyde Johannesburg interior: boho bar with wine racks, plants, red chairs, tables, and skyline view

Luxuria Lifestyle checks into Hyde Johannesburg

Leave the ordinary at the door and dive into this design-led urban retreat, where mid-century swagger meets Johannesburg’s vibrant creative pulse, revealing a hidden, nocturnal secret between the floors – the sultry, 1970s mystery of Nine Lives.

To me, Rosebank has always felt like Johannesburg’s heartbeat, but my arrival at the Hyde made it feel less like a new hotel opening and more like the city finally finding its rhythm. Nestled in the pulse of the creative district, this debut African property from the Ennismore collective swapped traditional luxury for an atmosphere that felt infinitely more alive.

The moment I stepped inside Hyde, I quickly realised that this is not just a place to stay – it is an entire energy. It is an innovative hotel and is impressive.

Entering the building, it felt a bit like stepping into a quirky art gallery filled with Bohemian-inspired art pieces of bold canvases, vibrant tapestries, ceramic work, beadwork and striking totem poles. With its laidback luxury, the property redefined my expectations of traditional luxury hospitality by seamlessly blending music, creativity and mixology into every corner of my stay.

From Los Angeles to Rosebank

This bohemian ethos makes perfect sense given the hotel’s roots. Hyde is a global lifestyle brand of hotels, lounges, and residences. Launched in Los Angeles, the brand has since expanded to major cultural hubs like Miami, Dubai, Ibiza, and London. Now, the brand’s first African property brings that exact blend of urban sophistication and bohemian earthiness to South Africa’s most creative neighbourhood.

In 2025, Hyde Rosebank was officially recognised as Business Hotel of the Year by the Luxe Hotel Awards. Whether your visit is for leisure or corporate ventures, these dynamic, curated spaces are masterfully designed to inspire connection and participation.

The Landmark Identity

I discovered that Hyde calls The Bank home – it is a cleverly repurposed old 1970s bank building that now stands as a celebration of modern architecture on the skyline. Recognised by the World Travel Awards as Africa’s Leading New Hotel, this clever mixed-use development perfectly balances high-end hospitality with vibrant co-working spaces and premium corporate amenities.

Importantly, the property holds Green Key certification—an internationally recognised eco-label verified across more than ninety countries through independent audits. Solar panels, an on-site borehole supplying around 40% of the hotel’s water needs, heat recovery systems, and LED lighting are all fundamental to the footprint. Sustainability here isn’t merely a badge; it’s an active mindset woven into how the building runs and how the team shows up every single day.

What really stood out for me was the hotel’s placement within a safe, pedestrian-friendly precinct. The city’s energy unfolded right on my doorstep, allowing me to step directly across the street into the premier shopping and lifestyle hubs of Rosebank Mall and The Zone @ Rosebank. This gave me effortless access to the district’s cosmopolitan buzz, while a mere six-minute stroll to the Rosebank Gautrain Station allowed me to seamlessly link my creative sanctuary to the rest of the city and the airport.

Bohemian Warmth, Skyline Views

If the lobby gave me the hotel’s heartbeat, the rooms showed me its soul, wrapped in mid-century warmth and tailor-made for a traveller like me. What struck me immediately were the massive floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the room with natural light and gave sweeping views of the Rosebank skyline. Most welcome of all is that at least one window section could open to allow fresh air inside, which is a rare and welcome luxury for city hotels.

There was an easy, bohemian-chic warmth to our room, balancing a colour palette of creams and browns with sophisticated splashes of blush pink and baby blue accents. I loved the stylish, uncluttered layout, thoughtfully designed with ample cupboard space, a remarkably comfortable bed with plush bedding and luxurious linens that practically guaranteed a perfect night’s sleep behind the heavy blackout curtains.

Here, the hotel’s vibrant energy effortlessly transitioned into a serene personal sanctuary. The blend of modern comfort with artistic touches fascinated me and highlighted local South African talent that continued onto the bedroom walls, alongside curated coffee table books—the one in our room was a captivating look at 1,000 well-known record covers. It is clear the hotel was built with the tech-obsessed, minimalist millennial in mind. Every room comes equipped with a high-spec Sony wireless speaker—a direct nod to the brand’s music-first DNA, practically encouraging guests to bring their own festival vibe to the stay.

Proud Mary: Mid-Century Magic & Sunny Socialising

My culinary journey began at Proud Mary, which drew me right in with its sun-drenched, glamorous ambience in a mid-century modern setting with a relaxed atmosphere. It was here that we enjoyed breakfast and dinner, framed by dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, polished brass, and a bustling neighbourhood crowd.

Mornings here are a bright, beautiful ritual revolving around expertly crafted artisan coffee and a highly creative breakfast menu. I treated myself to their innovative, flavour-packed morning dishes while watching the sunlight gracefully fill the chic mid-century space.

When we returned for dinner, the energy completely shifted into a sophisticated, bustling bistro vibe. The space glowed under warm, intimate lighting while we indulged in delicious small plates from their fire-cooked menu, paired beautifully with a crisp organic wine from a boutique family estate. This is Rosebank’s go-to spot and is the ultimate place to be seen for both creative daytime dining and a vibrant, upscale evening experience.

Proud Mary won the Hotel Restaurant of the Year award at South Africa’s 2025 Luxe Restaurant Awards.

Nine Lives: Velvet Seats & 1970s Secrets

This was undoubtedly my favourite part of the hotel. To experience the full depth of the property’s nightlife, I had to leave the everyday world behind. I soon discovered that as the sun dips, twilight pulls guests away from the bright energy of the lobby and down into a sultry subterranean world.

The venue thrives on absolute mystery as we could not simply walk directly there. Instead, the journey began with an intentional air of secrecy as a hostess guided us to a hidden elevator, unlocking access to a space between two floors, intentionally concealed from the rest of the hotel. Parting the curtain to this hidden world, I was instantly transported into an intimate, feline-inspired time capsule. The contrast was intoxicating; daylight completely vanished, replaced by low amber lamps, heavy velvet textures, and the crackle of smooth vinyl beats.

The concept here is built around playful rebellion and curated secrecy, creating an “if you know, you know” supper club environment. I spent my night tucked into a shadowy, curved booth while the space glowed under warm, intimate lighting. We indulged in incredible plates from their fire-cooked menu, savouring a bottle of sparkling wine that paired beautifully with the meal. It is a hidden sanctuary that made us feel less like a temporary hotel guest and more like we had been granted exclusive access to Johannesburg’s most secretive midnight inner circle.

The Hyde Impression

I walked away feeling that Hyde Rosebank is not just a place to stay, it is the exact type of soulful city escape I always hope to find. The property effortlessly turns the routine into the unforgettable with a signature blend of distinctive design, community connection, and a beating, creative atmosphere. Every space feels casual, sociable, and deeply reflective of local South African culture.

What I loved most was the easy contrast of the place by moving seamlessly from the bright, glamorous bustle of Proud Mary right into the seductive, after-hours mystique of Nine Lives. It really felt like slipping right into the flow of Johannesburg’s creative scene.

Every corner of the hotel gently pushed me to look at things a bit differently. It is a beautifully designed, captivating hotel where I completely lost track of time, proving that leaving the ordinary at the door was easily the best decision I could have made. I am already looking forward to my next visit.
