Liberty and Ocean Bottle Present Currents: First Wave
A new collaboration celebrating the movement of ideas, craftsmanship and culture across the world’s oceans.
Liberty has partnered with Ocean Bottle to launch Currents:
First Wave, a new collection of reusable bottles featuring three reworked designs drawn from Liberty’s 150-year archive.
Combining Liberty’s enduring commitment to artistry and Ocean Bottle’s mission to protect the ocean, the collaboration brings together heritage design with purposeful innovation. Each bottle purchased funds the collection of 11.4kg of plastic in coastal communities around the world – turning design into direct, positive impact.
Currents marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration inspired by the movement of ideas, materials and cultures across the ocean. Guided by the seasons, each chapter will explore a different coastal landscape through Liberty prints selected from the archive, celebrating the connection between creativity, place and the natural world.
The First Wave collection marks the beginning of Currents: a long-term collaboration inspired by the movement of ideas, materials and cultures across the ocean.
Ocean Bottle in the Atrium
Ocean Bottle is taking over Liberty’s atrium with an immersive installation, Currents, from 28th July to 23rd August.
A towering fabric column rising to the full height of the Liberty Atrium, fading from light surface blue to deep ocean navy, will transport people to the bottom of the ocean and visualise floating plastic at the ocean’s surface.
The installation is designed to connect us with the ocean, providing a moment of escape from the city and a reminder of the plastic pollution problem.
The collection
The First Wave collection is made up of three unique designs:
Enzo Serenade
Characterised by its eclectic mix of motifs and design styles, Enzo Serenade was hand-drawn in the Liberty studio and takes cues from the creative oeuvre of Arts and Crafts luminary Lewis Foreman Day.
Ocean Bottle reinterprets Enzo Serenade as a reflection of craft heritage and coastal landscapes. From forest paths to coastal waterways, this design mimics the routes and practices that connect communities with the natural world around them.
Morley Blossom
Drawing on ten archival floral prints from the 1930s, Morley Blossom weaves together a patchwork of Liberty’s rich design heritage.
For Ocean Bottle, Morley Blossom mirrors where rivers meet the ocean in a landscape of water, flora, and movement. This design echoes the vibrancy of the coast and the abundance of life found along the shoreline.
Prospect Vista
Inspired by the stylistic hallmarks of the 1960s Art Nouveau revival era, Prospect Vista was hand-painted in the Liberty studio and echoes motifs found in Bernard Nevill’s ever-popular Prospect Road pattern.
Ocean Bottle reconsiders Prospect Vista as a reflection of a world where flowering species and vibrant ecosystems bloom. Connected by rivers that flow from the forest to the ocean, this design depicts the extraordinary botanical world of our tropical rainforests.
Design with Purpose
For over 150 years, Liberty has drawn inspiration from cultures, craftsmanship and artistic traditions across the world. Currents continues that legacy through a shared belief that design can tell meaningful stories while creating positive impact.
Every Ocean Bottle purchased funds the collection of 11.4kg of plastic before it reaches the ocean. To date, Ocean Bottle has funded the collection of more than 26 million kgs of plastic worldwide.
Nick Doman, CEO and Co-Founder, Ocean Bottle, said:
“Protecting the ocean is at the heart of everything Ocean Bottle does. Liberty brings together exceptional design and measurable impact, partnering to create a collection inspired by the coastal landscapes and communities our mission helps protect.”
Tam Rahimi, Partnership Director, Ocean Bottle, said:
“Currents is rooted in the idea that the ocean connects us all. Together with Liberty, we’ve created a collection that celebrates storytelling through design while helping to protect the places and communities that inspire it.”
Pere Bruach, Design Manager, Liberty, said:
“For more than 150 years, Liberty’s prints have told stories inspired by the natural world, craftsmanship and cultures from across the globe. This collaboration offered a natural opportunity to bring those stories into a new context, pairing our design heritage with Ocean Bottle’s commitment to creating meaningful environmental impact.”
