From the moment you enter The Peninsula London and leave the bustle of Hyde Park Corner behind, there is a sense that the evening is on the verge of becoming something rather special.

Then you find Canton Blue, tucked within the hotel like a beautifully kept secret, and suddenly London feels a little further away.

The room glows with deep, inky blues, rich scarlets and warm woods. Porcelain catches the light, while fine elements reveal themselves wherever your eye wanders. There is history embedded in the walls, but nothing about it feels museum-like or distant. Instead, it feels wonderfully alive – layered, intimate and quietly glamorous.

And then there is the welcome. Before the first cocktail is poured or the menu opened, the team make you feel as though you have arrived somewhere they are genuinely delighted to have you. It is the kind of warmth that cannot be taught. There is polish, of course – this is The Peninsula, after all – but there is also an ease to it. A softness. Their beautiful uniforms, inspired by traditional Chinese dress, add a further layer to the sense of occasion and sit perfectly within the rich surroundings.

They are attentive without ever being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu and wonderfully generous with their recommendations, making the entire experience appear seamless from beginning to end. The service shows real care, and despite the elegance and formality of the setting, you feel completely at ease. You don’t feel as though you are being served dinner; you feel looked after.

A Restaurant With a Journey Threaded Through Its Walls

Canton Blue draws inspiration from the extraordinary story of the Keying, a Chinese trading ship that journeyed from Hong Kong to Britain in the 19th century. That sense of travel and cultural connection runs gently through the restaurant, with rich references to the sea, trade, and the relationship between Britain and China. At the same time, a beautiful celestial map stretching above the dining room offers a quiet nod to the skies once used to navigate journeys across the world.

It is the sort of space which invites you to linger over every detail. Yet what we loved most was that, for all its glory, Canton Blue never feels cold. The room has a cosiness that softens everything. The lighting is low and flattering, the colours feel cocooning, and the tender whisper of conversation wraps around the restaurant. It is somewhere to settle into and forget the time, where dinner naturally becomes an evening.

The Joy of Ordering Too Much

Then comes the menu, and self-restraint becomes rather difficult. Canton Blue is anchored in the traditions of Cantonese cuisine, celebrating its depth, delicacy and generosity while bringing together exceptional ingredients and beautifully refined technique.

The menu feels made for sharing – and that is exactly how it should be experienced. Our table slowly became a feast, with dishes arriving one after another, each featuring something different: delicate dim sum, beautifully prepared seafood, richly flavoured meats, comforting rice and noodles. There is something so lovely about eating this way – reaching across the table for another spoonful, passing plates between one another and finding yourself asking, repeatedly, “Have you tried this?”

The dim sum is particularly beautiful. Small, intricate parcels arrive like little works of art, filled with carefully balanced flavours and incredibly delicate textures. From luxurious lobster and caviar to hand-peeled prawns, scallops and comforting xiao long bao, there is real craftsmanship in every piece

But Canton Blue never allows refinement to overshadow pleasure. Yes, the food is exquisite, but it is also generous, comforting and made to be enjoyed. This is food to share, to reach for and to order another plate of because you didn’t quite get enough the first time.

Where Cantonese Tradition Connects London Luxury

As the menu unfolds, so does the depth and generosity of Cantonese cooking. Beautifully crisp dishes come from the barbecue selection, alongside fragrant wok-fired seafood and tender meats layered with ginger, chilli, black bean, garlic, and aromatic spices.

Lobster and Wagyu sit alongside scallops, prawns, and beautifully steamed fish. Rich, glossy noodles and fragrant fried rice arrive with the pleasant familiarity that makes you want another forkful. And then there are those moments when the entire table appears to pause – a particularly beautiful dish arrives, someone takes the first bite, there is a little silence, and then everyone else reaches for it.

That is the joy of Canton Blue. The menu is luxurious, certainly, but never aloof. It celebrates extraordinary ingredients without losing the care and generosity that sits at the heart of great Chinese dining.

Cocktails That Begin the Story

The drinks are equally considered. Before dinner, there is every reason to linger over the cocktail menu – a beautifully creative collection that draws inspiration from both East and West, with intriguing flavours and unexpected ingredients blended into every glass. There is a sense of adventure here, but nothing feels overly complicated or clever for the sake of it. The cocktails feel like part of the story: elegant, considered, and a little playful.

Alongside them sits an impressive collection of wine, sake and Chinese spirits, giving plenty of opportunity to explore something new or find the perfect pairing for the table. Our advice: arrive with nowhere else to be, because Canton Blue isn’t somewhere to rush through.

The Kind of Evening You Want to Stay Inside

What stayed with us most about Canton Blue was the feeling of the evening. The warm feeling of the room, the kindness of the team, the beautiful uniforms moving through the subtle light, and the sound of conversation and glasses clinking as another delicious dish arrived at the table. Canton Blue feels glamorous but never intimidating. It is somewhere to dress up, settle in and let the evening unfold – knowing you are in very good hands.

More Than Dinner

Canton Blue is beautiful, yes. The food is exceptional, the cocktails are wonderfully creative, and the setting is everything you would hope for from The Peninsula London. But it is the comfort that lingers with you – the warmth of the welcome, the generosity of the food and the care of the team.

We left still talking about the dishes, the atmosphere and, most of all, how lovely the entire evening had felt. Because some restaurants are somewhere you go for dinner. Canton Blue is somewhere you want to return to.
