Luxuria Reviews Constance Le Chaland, Mauritius

There is something wonderfully refreshing about a resort that doesn’t try too hard to tame its surroundings. Constance Le Chaland is one such resort: the wild southeast coast provides the backdrop, giving this contemporary retreat a sense of space and seclusion.

The resort is close to the airport – around 10 to 15 minutes by car – and knowing we only had a short journey ahead was a relief as we flew into Mauritius with two small children. The approach to the hotel through small villages and swaying sugarcane hinted that we were heading to a peaceful corner of the island.

The resort grounds are filled with dense tropical vegetation, with snaking paths leading to a broad sweep of white sand and a wide turquoise lagoon. The adjacent La Cambuse Beach is popular with locals, especially at weekends. Rather than a postcard-perfect beach engineered solely for holidaymakers, Constance Le Chaland’s beach feels like a genuine piece of the island’s southeast coast.

Formerly Anantara Iko Mauritius, the property became part of Constance Hotels and Resorts in early 2026, bringing classic Mauritian hospitality to a resort whose architecture feels distinctly contemporary.

The modern design is one of the first things that strikes you. There is a sense of openness, with natural materials, clean lines and plenty of glass creating a seamless connection between the interiors and the landscape. The accommodation and facilities fan out around the main pool, while a second pool at the back of the resort has a swim-up bar and is sheltered from the south’s sometimes strong winds.

The rooms, especially the suites, are generously sized and elegantly styled with wide balconies providing usable outdoor space. The bathrooms are especially luxurious, spacious with standalone oval baths, separate showers and double basins.

For families or groups wanting even more space, the two- and four-bedroom villas at the rear of the resort take the experience a step further. They feature modern interiors, equipped kitchens, and indoor and outdoor living areas overlooking their own pool. The villas are within easy reach of all the hotel facilities, meaning it is just a short stroll to dinner, but should you prefer not to venture out, your villa butler is on hand to bring you everything you need.

In addition to the main buffet, there are three à la carte restaurants. Flame and Tide is a standout, featuring grilled meat and fish with a creative twist. We found the service here to be excellent – professional, personal and welcoming. The extensive children’s menu was another bonus for us, with plenty to keep the whole family happy. We also enjoyed Zafran, an intimate restaurant with just a handful of tables serving excellent Indian cuisine.

Guests have access to a wide range of complimentary activities, and for youngsters aged four to 11 years there is the Coconut Tribe Kids’ Club. I enjoyed starting my day with tai chi by the pool, and ending it with the hotel’s weekly rum tasting, hosted by the very knowledgeable Dany. Other options included yoga, a guided hike to the nearby Royal Palm forest, cycling tours and paddleboarding. Snorkelling in the nearby Blue Bay Marine Park with the hotel’s resident marine biologist is a highlight for many guests, offering the chance to learn more about the marine environment and the steps being taken to protect it.

The historic and characterful town of Mahébourg is just a few miles from the resort. It is worth a visit to experience a more traditional side of Mauritius, especially on a Monday when its lively market takes place.

Constance Le Chaland is an appealing choice for anyone who wants the comforts of a five-star resort without losing sight of the island’s identity. And if you opt for one of the pool villas, you have your own private corner of Mauritius with access to the service and facilities of a luxury resort whenever you want them.

The resort feels particularly well suited to the southeast coast: sophisticated but not showy, contemporary but connected to nature, and luxurious without losing its Mauritian identity.
