A Little Mayfair Magic: An Afternoon at Jo Hansford
Some days are bad hair days; others are days when you arrive at a Mayfair salon looking as though you’ve been dragged through a jet stream. Unfortunately for me, it was very much the latter.
London had decided to put on a spectacularly stormy performance, and by the time I reached Jo Hansford, my hair had taken full force of it. Windswept, bedraggled, and in desperate need of professional attention, I walked inside, hoping for a little hair magic. Thankfully, I had come to exactly the right place.
From the instant I arrived, the contrast couldn’t have been greater. Outside, London was doing its worst. Inside, it was pure warmth, calm, and the genuinely lovely hospitality that makes you feel at home immediately. The team couldn’t have been more welcoming, and within minutes, the weather, and the state of my hair, were happily forgotten.
A Little History Behind the Name
Of course, Jo Hansford is far more than just another beautiful Mayfair salon. Founded in 1993 by legendary colourist Jo Hansford MBE, the business has spent over three decades building a reputation as one of London’s most prestigious destinations for hair colour.
And Jo’s story is rather wonderful. At a time when the hairdressing industry was dominated by men, she set out to do things differently, opening her first salon with a team of just eight and a determination to put hair colour firmly in the spotlight. Having spent more than 15 years working with Vidal Sassoon, she certainly knew a thing or two about beautiful hair.
Jo herself has been awarded an MBE for her contribution to hairdressing and, in 2024, received a Royal Warrant from Queen Camilla. Not bad for someone who was reportedly told her business wouldn’t last three months!
What I particularly love, though, is that aside from its impressive history, royal connections and celebrity clientele, the atmosphere remains wonderfully welcoming. There is clearly an enormous amount of expertise behind the name, but absolutely none of the stuffiness you might expect. And that, for me, makes all the difference.
Colour Confidence with Jess
My appointment began with the wonderful Jess, who was looking after my colour. Naturally, within approximately thirty seconds of sitting down, I’d pulled out Pinterest and was enthusiastically scrolling through photographs of gorgeous, warm autumnal browns that I’d convinced myself I absolutely needed. Rich chocolate tones, soft caramel warmth and everything in between. My camera roll was essentially a tribute to brunette hair.
Thankfully, Jess was more than happy to entertain my rather extensive collection of inspiration photographs. What I genuinely appreciated was that she didn’t simply agree with everything I showed her. Instead, we chatted through the different shades, what would complement my existing colour and how we could achieve something beautifully warm, rich and natural-looking. Rather than simply sitting in the chair and leaving everything to the professionals, I was encouraged to understand my hair, the colour process and how best to look after it between appointments.
Jess was an absolute delight. Knowledgeable, attentive and clearly passionate about what she does, she made the entire experience feel wonderfully personal. We also quickly bonded over our mutual love of travel and, perhaps unsurprisingly given the weather outside, our appreciation for climates considerably warmer than London. Between conversations about beautiful destinations, sunshine and our next adventures, the appointment absolutely flew by.
There is something reassuring about being in the hands of someone who really understands colour but also takes the time to explain things without making you feel like you need a hairdressing qualification to follow along.
That lovely balance of expertise and approachability stood out. Nothing felt rushed; every question was welcome, and the focus was on achieving beautiful, healthy-looking hair rather than simply sending me out the door with a fresh colour.
The result was gorgeous. Beautifully refreshed, with the warmth and richness I’d been hoping for, and a polished, natural-looking finish that felt sophisticated without looking overdone.
Making Sure the Bob Is Bobbing with Phoebe
Next, I was handed over to the equally lovely Phoebe for my cut and blow-dry.
Now, for a lady who previously had hair halfway down her back, sitting in a salon chair and asking a hairdresser to make sure her bob is bobbing is always a slightly strange conversation.
Yet here we are.
Having spent years with long hair, I’ve discovered that shorter styles come with an entirely different set of considerations. There’s nowhere to hide a questionable cut, and getting the shape just right is everything. I wanted something chic, full of movement and beautifully styled, without looking too hard or structured.
Thankfully, Phoebe understood exactly what I meant, even if my explanation was rather less technical than hers.
She took the time to talk through the shape, how my hair naturally falls and how to keep everything looking fabulous beyond the salon chair. Again, that wonderful educational element came through. It wasn’t just about giving me a lovely haircut; it was about making sure I understood how to look after and style it myself.
A good haircut can make an enormous difference, but a great one is so much more than taking a little off the ends. Phoebe’s attention to detail was wonderful, and I felt completely comfortable leaving my hair in her hands.
The cut was fresh, flattering and beautifully considered, while the blow-dry was the perfect finishing touch. Glossy, full of movement and with just the right amount of bounce. The bob was, I’m delighted to report, very much bobbing.
You know that wonderful feeling when you catch sight of yourself in the mirror after a salon appointment and immediately start wondering where you can go to show off your hair? That was very much the situation.
After arriving looking like I’d been caught in a small natural disaster, I left with beautifully styled hair and a rather large smile – quite the transformation.
It’s the Little Things
Of course, beautiful hair is why we book a salon appointment, but the experience around it is what makes a place particularly special.
At Jo Hansford, customer service deserves just as much praise as the technical expertise. Every member of the team I encountered was friendly, attentive and genuinely lovely. There was none of the intimidating atmosphere that can occasionally accompany London’s more prestigious beauty addresses. Instead, everything was relaxed, welcoming, and refreshingly down-to-earth. I was also impressed by the sense of care throughout the appointment. It wasn’t simply about delivering a beautiful result on the day but helping me understand how to maintain it afterwards. That willingness to share professional knowledge, in addition to such thoughtful service, made the experience feel more worthwhile.
It’s also worth mentioning just how lovely it is to spend a few hours somewhere where the people genuinely seem to enjoy what they do. From the conversations and smiles to the thoughtful little touches throughout my visit, the whole experience felt wonderfully relaxed. Nothing was too much trouble, and I never once felt like just another appointment in the diary.
The Verdict
Jo Hansford has earned a celebrated reputation in the world of hair, and my visit made it easy to see why.
Yes, the colour was beautiful. Yes, the cut and blow-dry were fabulous. But what I will remember just as fondly is how lovely everyone was. Jess and Phoebe were both exceptional, combining genuine talent with friendliness, patience and a real enthusiasm for what they do. I loved spending one part of my afternoon discussing sunshine-filled destinations and autumnal brunette inspiration with Jess, and the next having a rather amusing conversation with Phoebe about the structural requirements of a good bob. It seemed personal, easy and genuinely enjoyable, which is exactly how a salon visit should be.
For me, the best luxury experiences are the ones that make you feel completely comfortable while quietly delivering something exceptional. Jo Hansford does exactly that.
I arrived looking as though I’d been defeated by the British weather and left feeling like a new woman, with gorgeous autumnal colour, a beautifully bouncing bob and a few new travel destinations to dream about.
If that isn’t the sign of an excellent hair appointment, I don’t know what is.
