Arrival and Luxurious Accommodations

Situated in the beautiful Stratford-upon-Avon, this 16th-century Elizabethan manor house provides the perfect sanctuary for a quiet romantic getaway. Nestled in 11 acres of grounds in a location steeped in history, there is something for everyone to enjoy at Billesley Manor. Originally consisting of a wooden manor house, a church, and a small village, the manor house was rebuilt in stone in the 16th century by Sir Robert Lee. After a £5.6m refurbishment, Billesley Manor continues to build upon its already illustrious reputation.

Upon arrival, we were stunned by the beautiful surroundings and, after a warm welcome, we were shown to our suite. With its panelled walls and mix of contemporary and traditional furnishings, the décor perfectly combines history and culture with timeless style. With multiple luxury room options—including four-poster beds and roll-top baths within the manor house and contemporary rooms in the newly converted barns—we were spoilt for choice! Settling into our suite was a breeze, with its raised lounge area, comfy bed, and plush décor. The bathroom was perfectly clean, with contemporary fittings, a bath, and shower.

Gastronomic Delights and Idyllic Grounds

We made our way to the bar, with its open fireplace, to enjoy a drink and a delicious club sandwich. We were delighted by the choice of bar food, which offered everything from burgers to noodles. Later in the afternoon, we were treated to a traditional afternoon tea in the stylish drawing room before heading out to explore the grounds.

Magical Gardens and Historic Church

The perfectly manicured gardens and impressive shrubbery have been masterfully designed to represent the chess pieces in the children’s classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, giving this manor a magical feel. A short walk through the grounds leads to the beautiful church. Records for a church attached to Billesley Manor date back to the eleventh century. Rumour has it that William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in this small church in 1582. Certainly, his granddaughter, Elizabeth Nash, was married here in 1646. The parish was always small and by 1649 had shrunk back to just one building, Billesley Manor. The church we see today was rebuilt in 1692 before being declared redundant in 1978. Guests can now acquire the key to the church from hotel reception and explore this beautiful piece of history for themselves.

The state-of-the-art wellness facilities made for the ideal way to relax after a long day of exploring. Treatment rooms are filled with a good number of indulgent products that are guaranteed to give you the ultimate holistic spa experience. After a luxurious massage, we took full advantage of the well-equipped gym, sauna, and swimming pool before heading to our room to get ready for a romantic dinner. Featuring original 16th-century oak panelling, open fireplaces, and grand chandeliers, The Stuart restaurant offered tasty dishes that were well presented.

The next morning, The Stuart Restaurant was also the setting for our delicious breakfast. The light and airy surroundings made for a tranquil breakfast experience after a lovely night’s sleep. The continental breakfast had a wide variety of fruits, cereals, and pastries, followed by a delicious traditional cooked breakfast.

Final Thoughts

All in all, our stay at Billesley Manor was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle. The friendly service, beautiful décor, and generous facilities never fail to impress.
