Elegance in Charlottesville: Wine & Historic Estates

A wine weekend sounds simple enough. Find a vineyard, book somewhere nearby and work out dinner later.

Around Charlottesville, that approach can actually work pretty well. The Blue Ridge foothills give you plenty of countryside to explore, while vineyards, historic properties and small inns make staying outside the city part of the appeal. The only real danger is trying to fit far too much into two days.

Stay Somewhere Worth Coming Back To

Set among the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia’s wine country has all the ingredients for a romantic weekend. A couple of days visiting wineries around Charlottesville or Loudoun County can be paired with a historic country estate, vineyard villa or small inn. Accommodation search tools are useful for comparing properties with old Virginia character alongside the comforts you’d rather not give up for the sake of history. Looking through unique places to stay in Virginia can turn up private estates, historic bed-and-breakfasts and vineyard cottages that make the accommodation part of the trip.

Do check the map, though. “Virginia wine country” covers a lot of ground.

Don’t Overdo It

Three tastings in one afternoon might look perfectly reasonable while you’re planning from home. Once you’re there, it can feel like work.

Choose one or two places you genuinely want to visit and give yourself time at each. Have lunch. Walk around if that’s an option. Sit for a while without immediately checking when you need to leave.

You’ll also need to work out who’s driving. If everybody wants to take part in the tasting, arrange transportation beforehand. That conversation is considerably easier before the first glass.

Charlottesville Is Worth an Afternoon

Don’t use Charlottesville purely as somewhere to pass through on the way to the next vineyard. Leave a few hours for the city itself. Get coffee, wander downtown and find somewhere for lunch without worrying about what time the next booking starts.

It can be a welcome change after a day spent driving through the countryside. And if lunch takes longer than planned? Fine. That’s one fewer item on the itinerary.

Treat Loudoun as Another Weekend

Loudoun County belongs in the Virginia wine conversation, but it’s in Northern Virginia rather than just around the corner from Charlottesville. Trying to cover both regions during a short break can leave you seeing rather a lot of Virginia through a windshield.

If Charlottesville is this weekend, let Loudoun be another one. There’s no shortage of reasons to come back.

Old Buildings Come With Surprises

Historic manor houses and converted country properties look wonderful in photographs. Some also have narrow stairs, unusual room layouts and other reminders that nobody designing them centuries ago was thinking about rolling suitcases.

Read the details. Check bathrooms, heating, air conditioning, parking and accessibility. If you’re planning to spend time outside in the evening, see whether there’s actually somewhere to sit. Character is great. Knowing what you’ve booked is even better.

Leave an Evening Empty

This may be the hardest part of planning. Don’t book anything. Come back from the day’s tasting, sit outside and see whether anyone actually wants to go anywhere. You might end up finding dinner nearby. You might stay exactly where you are. A countryside weekend can survive an empty evening.

Final Thoughts

Charlottesville doesn’t need a packed itinerary. Choose a couple of vineyards, find somewhere you’d genuinely enjoy staying and leave room for lunch to run late.

You came to wine country, after all. Spending half the weekend checking the time rather defeats the point.
