House in the Wild: Redefining Eco-luxury in the Maasai Mara, Kenya

House in the Wild: A Vision of Natural Luxury

House in the Wild, part of the broader Collection in the Wild, is the epitome of a natural luxury eco-lodge, set on the banks of the Mara River, within the Enonkishu Conservancy, Kenya. Its origins took the form of a modest mud hut on a bean farm surrounded by degraded and severely overgrazed land. But thanks to the vision and commitment of its founders, Lippa and Tarquin Wood, it has been transformed into a unique, luxury lodge in a thriving community-driven conservation and rewilding project that is driven by three promises: restoring biodiversity, improving livelihoods and providing extraordinary experiences.

The Rewilding Revolution Since 2012

Since 2012, the land surrounding the House in the Wild has been devoted to a pioneering rewilding project in partnership with the Maasai community, the first of its kind where the land on the edge of the Mara has changed from farming back to nature. Using grazing animals as the drivers of habitat creation, and with the restoration of dynamic, natural water courses, the project has seen extraordinary increases in wildlife and improved quality of well-managed livestock. The transformation of the area has been inspiring, with common sightings now of cheetah, leopard and of course the resident pride of lion in the Enonkishu Conservancy.

Exceptional Game Viewing Standards

Ultimately this collaboration is leading to some of the highest standards in the Mara for game viewing – low density of vehicles, certified and respectful guides and rangers, and top-quality game viewing conditions and infrastructure. Tourism has changed the area into a thriving community-driven wildlife haven, where guests can immerse themselves beyond the safari vehicle, in various projects through connections with The Mara Training Centre.

Luxurious Cottages and Family Suites

House in the Wild itself features luxurious cottages and family suites, blending exclusive luxury with rustic charm. Featuring open-air living spaces, cosy rooms, and unique decor, it has been built using local materials and inspired by Maasai culture. Each room offers stunning views of the Mara River or the savanna, providing a serene retreat after a day of safari and its immersive nature offers the chance to restore, relax and nurture a sense of place.

Beyond House in the Wild: Wild Villas and Wild Hill

Collection in the Wild goes beyond its flagship House in the Wild. Its Wild Villas now offer a selection of beautiful private homes for those looking for the ultimate exclusivity. Most recently, the most spectacular project to date has just launched in summer 2024 – Wild Hill.

Wild Hill: Pinnacle of Maasai Mara Luxury

Built on top of the Kileleoni Hill – the highest point in the Maasai Mara – the breathtaking Wild Hill house is accessed through a secret tunnel and overlooks the setting sun over the vast plains below. For as far as the eye can see, a Kenyan wilderness stretches out in front of you. The Wild Hill offers unique experiences including a world-class wellness spa, walking safaris, e-biking, horseback safaris and a photography hide, all designed to deepen your connection with nature.

A Beacon of Luxury Eco-Tourism

A completely encapsulating story of hope, growth and progress, the Collection in the Wild properties take guests on an unforgettable experience of the Maasai Mara’s safari wildlife and culture. But they are more than luxury safari destinations, they are a beacon of an unwavering commitment to restoring wildlife habitats, enhancing community livelihoods, and delivering unparalleled guest experiences, making them true examples of luxury eco-tourism.
