Muswell Hill, north London, is nestled between Hampstead and Wood Green and is an area full of an eclectic mix of fabulous restaurants, cafés, bars, and boutiques. It’s buzzy and lively.

We were invited to dine at La Lluna on Muswell Hill Broadway, an authentic and extremely busy Spanish restaurant with a great atmosphere and laid-back vibe. La Lluna serves delicious traditional and modern tapas, all freshly prepared using either locally sourced products or specialties from Spain, such as cheeses, jamón, charcuterie, and Padrón peppers.

We began with a gorgeous selection of gambas al ajillo – king prawns sautéed with garlic, olive oil, and very spicy chilli peppers. We also chose tartare de cangrejo, which is avocado stuffed with crab and black caviar, served on ribbons of cucumber. This was delicious and light. Our final starter to share was pan con tomate, classic sourdough bread toasted and piled high with fresh tomato, drizzled with olive oil.

We had a little break before our main course; we decided to share a couple of paella dishes, one with meat and one with fish and shellfish. They were packed full of mussels, prawns, clams, chicken, and chorizo, and the rice was soft and juicy. They were both absolutely divine and transported us back to those fabulous little dining spots in rural Spain. To further enhance that Spanish experience, we had a jug of sangria – a perfect pairing with paella.

We were quite full by now, but who can resist churros with a rich chocolate dipping sauce? Not us – it was the perfect end to a truly delightful evening.

The chef is a creative genius; the cuisine is memorable and tasty. La Lluna is a superb restaurant for a romantic date night, a birthday or anniversary, or a girly get-together. The team will ensure your evening is perfect.

The décor is totally Spanish, with colourful artwork adorning the walls featuring flamenco dancers and food. The La Lluna team is helpful and friendly, the front-of-house staff warm and welcoming – nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed every minute, as well as every mouthful.
