Luxuria Reviews Heritage Le Telfair Mauritius

Simply entering the lobby at Heritage Le Telfair feels like an event. Soaring ceilings, pale timber walls, oversized windows and wooden shutters make an immediate impression, setting the tone for a stay that combines old-world charm with contemporary luxury.

The design evokes the grand 19th-century plantation houses of Mauritius’s sugar estates, and there is a romantic, timeless quality to it. For me, the architecture is one of Le Telfair’s greatest strengths: it gives the resort character and a visible link to the island’s past.

Le Telfair sits within the historic Bel Ombre Estate, which for two centuries was the island’s largest sugar plantation. Stone buildings that once hummed with the sound of sugarcane-processing machinery stand at the entrance to the resort, reminders of its history. One of them now contains World of Seashells, the largest collection of seashells in Africa and well worth a visit. The resort’s name is another nod to its past – a tribute to 19th-century Irish botanist, Charles Telfair, who once managed the Bel Ombre Estate.

The resort sits astride a river, with attractive bridges linking one part to another, and old- fashioned wooden signs pointing the way. The river leads into the lagoon, which is wide here and perfect for exploring by kayak or paddleboard. Our family enjoyed a glass-bottom boat trip out to the reef, where our children were mesmerised by the colourful fish darting in and out of view. From the water, with the hills rising behind it, we had a chance to appreciate the hotel’s classical beauty from another angle.

The suites are gathered around the main pool, which is kept wonderfully warm and therefore suitable for all ages. With a well-stocked bar at the end of the pool and restaurants nearby, it’s easy to while away an entire day here, lounging in one of the muslin-draped cabanas.

Inside, the suites follow the same classical aesthetic as the public spaces, combining traditional styling with modern comforts. They are spacious, with generous bathrooms, plenty of natural light and wide balconies. All come with 24-hour butler service, with your designated resident host contactable via WhatsApp.

Guests have access to the wider Bel Ombre Estate, including all the facilities at family-friendly sister resort Heritage Awali. In practice, this gives guests a choice of 13 restaurants, including the exquisite Chateau de Bel Ombre. Built in 1810, it has all the features of a plantation house of that era – high ceilings, wood panelling and wide verandas overlooking a manicured parterre overflowing with tropical plants. The food is as elegant and sophisticated as the building, presented like a work of art. The service,
as you would expect, is superb.

Le Telfair’s open-sided Cavendish Bar with its rattan-backed chairs and sofas is the perfect setting for a rum punch or light lunch. The main restaurant, Annabella’s, has a calmer and more refined feel than most buZets. Breakfast is particularly good, with plenty of healthy options to balance out the treats on offer. We decided to mix things up a bit and have an à la carte breakfast at C Beach Club one morning, overlooking the club’s pool. Everything was cooked perfectly, and the service was excellent. At weekends, C Beach Club is popular with locals who can purchase a day pass to enjoy the facilities, watersports and music from a DJ.

The Heritage resorts are very popular with golfers and for good reason. Le Château Golf Course has been voted best golf course in the Indian Ocean eight years in a row. The new La Réserve Golf Links is solely for the use of Heritage guests. It offers superb views from every tee and has an excellent clubhouse restaurant, serving a polished menu featuring local, seasonal ingredients.

Le Telfair’s Seven Colours Spa is tucked into the tropical gardens and feels wonderfully secluded. After a day on the beach, golfing or exploring the estate, it is an inviting place to slow down, with treatments, hammams, saunas and a ‘vitality pool’ where you can be pummelled by overhead water jets. The emphasis is on holistic wellbeing rather than just pampering, with regular yoga and other wellness sessions available daily.

Despite its polished appearance, Le Telfair is not a hotel that takes itself too seriously. Children are made very welcome, and there is plenty to keep them occupied, especially at the Timomo Kids’ Club. However, the resort doesn’t feel dominated by families, and there is an adults-only area with its own pool.

Le Telfair feels unmistakably Mauritian. So many luxury resorts around the world could be anywhere; Le Telfair has a stronger sense of place, echoing the island’s history and culture.

Its connection to Mauritius isn’t just a design feature or marketing ploy – the resort runs programmes that actively protect the island’s unique ecosystem. The on-site Marine Education Centre allows guests to learn about the island’s marine environment, with marine biologists leading hands-on activities including guided beach walks. The centre also runs coral reef conservation initiatives. In the hills behind the resort is the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve, which guests can explore on 4×4, quad bike or walking tours and learn more about local flora and fauna. The reserve is home to rare birds, including the pink pigeon and Mauritius kestrel.

As we reluctantly leave the resort, what stays with me most is the sense that Le Telfair belongs here. The plantation-style architecture, the classical gardens, the estate’s history and its commitment to protecting the local environment all contribute to the feeling that Heritage Le Telfair is deeply rooted in Mauritius – and that is what makes it special.
