Luxuria Reviews Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa, Mauritius
Few luxury resorts manage to feel equally perfect for honeymooners and young families. Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa, a member of Leading Hotels of the World on Mauritius’ idyllic west coast, achieves exactly that. With spacious private villas, intuitive service, superb dining and a deep understanding of what guests really need, it delivers an exceptional level of hospitality that feels effortless.
I was desperately trying to keep my exhausted toddler awake while we waited for our lunch to be served at Maradiva’s main restaurant when a kindly voice said, “Madam, your little boy looks very tired. Allow me to send your lunch to your villa so he can sleep, and you can relax.”
My saviour was Akeel, who oversees the incredibly sleek food and beverage operation at Maradiva Villas Resort and Spa. At any other hotel I probably would have fallen off my chair with surprise at this level of thoughtfulness and initiative, but this was day three of my stay, and I had come to realise that this kind of exceptional service is standard here. Throughout our stay, the staff anticipated our needs before we voiced them, delivering warm, discreet service that never felt rehearsed. It’s no surprise that so many guests return year after year.
Maradiva has all the romance expected of one of Mauritius’ most exclusive resorts, but families are not treated as an afterthought. When we arrived in our villa, we found it had been equipped not just with a cot but with a bottle steriliser, bottle warmer and nappy bin. This immediately removed many of the practical stresses of travelling with young children, allowing us to focus on enjoying our holiday.
Situated on Mauritius’ sheltered west coast, Maradiva enjoys some of the island’s most reliable weather. We visited in July, when the trade winds can be strong elsewhere, yet the resort remained calm and sunny. The beach is wide here and the shallow water perfect for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Not only does the west enjoy the best weather, but it also features incredible sunsets. Each evening, we watched the sun sink spectacularly into the Indian Ocean, providing the perfect backdrop to an apéritif or a pre-dinner stroll along the beach.
Set within 24 acres of mature tropical gardens, Maradiva is an intimate resort with just 64 private-pool villas with either one or two bedrooms. The generous spacing between villas creates an atmosphere of peace and privacy, while lush landscaping gives each residence a wonderfully secluded feel.
Each villa has its own private pool and plenty of comfy outdoor furniture. The family villas feature two separate bedroom pavilions arranged around a shared courtyard, so you can enjoy time together or find your own space. The bathrooms are indulgent, with oversized bathtubs and both indoor and outdoor showers. Thoughtful design details— from individual reading lights in the headboard to a transparent eye-height minibar— reflect the care that has gone into every aspect of the accommodation. It’s easy to understand why many guests choose to spend much of their holiday within their villa, particularly with 24-hour in-villa dining available.
However, it is worth emerging from your villa to head to the sumptuous spa, a sanctuary at the centre of the resort. I opted for an Ayurvedic consultation with resident doctor Praveen Nair, whose calm manner and expert guidance offered an inspiring introduction to the principles of this ancient Indian practice. After assessing my ‘dosha’ (body type) through a series of questions and pulse readings, he recommended simple lifestyle adjustments to ‘calm’ my doshas, which I had inadvertently been antagonising. To my delight, he recommended more warm foods and fewer salads! He then selected warm, therapeutic oils for a deeply restorative Ayurvedic massage tailored to my needs. Even without booking a treatment, guests can use the spa’s hammam, sauna, laconium and tranquil pool or just relax in the serene surroundings. Yoga and meditation sessions are on offer, and for more active types there is a gym, bikes to use, tennis courts and countless watersports.
Maradiva excels at creating authentic experiences that allow you to connect with the real Mauritius, whether that be excursions exploring the island or activities within the resort. The hotel organised for us a tour of the unspoilt south of Mauritius, including the sacred Hindu lake of Grand Bassin, or Ganga Talao. One of the highlights of our stay was a family Creole cooking class with Maradiva chef Noella Regnaud. Far more than a demonstration, it was an engaging hands-on lesson in Mauritian cuisine and local ingredients. Preparing traditional dishes together before sitting down to enjoy the meal was both educational and fun, and we left with smiling faces and significantly improved curry-making abilities.
Dining throughout our stay was consistently outstanding. At Haiku, theatrical, flaming teppanyaki performances delighted both adults and children, while Cilantro served refined Indian cuisine full of vibrant flavours. Beachside grills showcased beautifully fresh seafood in an unforgettable oceanfront setting. Breakfasts were generous and varied (even when taken in the villa), lunches elegant yet relaxed, and every dinner rivalled some of the best restaurants we’ve experienced anywhere in the world. Our special dietary requirements (two of us have coeliac disease) were taken very seriously, our gluten-free meals were no less delicious than the ‘normal’ versions, and we were never meant to feel like ordering special meals was an inconvenience. I was only sorry my late father wasn’t able to experience dining here. He would have loved Maradiva’s impressive wine cellar and its extraordinary collection of over 1,500 cigars stored in their own humidor, which can be paired with a fine cognac.
Beautiful surroundings and exceptional cuisine are only part of what defines luxury. Maradiva’s greatest strength lies in its people. The hotel is family-owned, and CEO Sanjiv Ramdanee clearly values every member of his team, which results in highly motivated and well-trained staff who take pride in what they do. Every member of staff seemed genuinely invested in making each guest’s stay memorable. Service was attentive without ever feeling intrusive, professional yet personal. Requests were met with enthusiasm, recommendations were thoughtful, and every interaction was accompanied by genuine warmth. Our children were made to feel incredibly welcome, not just within the kids’ club but throughout the resort, which isn’t always the case in luxury hotels.
Maradiva achieves something remarkably difficult. It retains all the tranquillity, romance and refinement expected of one of Mauritius’ finest luxury resorts while making families feel valued. Travelling with children can sometimes mean compromising on luxury, but Maradiva proved that no compromise is necessary.
Our family left feeling relaxed, inspired, wonderfully well fed and already planning our return. There can be few stronger endorsements than that.
