Luxuria’s Diane McLeish Reviews Gem Forest Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya
This was more than a stay; it was a collection of moments and a journey into the extraordinary, waiting to be discovered.
Arriving at the Gem Forest Hotel, I knew I was in for a treat. The elegant décor and serene ambience made for the perfect escape from Nairobi’s hustle and bustle; however, I also felt a radiant energy, as there is a sparkling vibe around the hotel, with it being jewel-inspired. I could not wait to explore all the nooks and crannies.
Gem Forest Hotel, with its 5-star rating and MGallery Collection status, is a modern, resplendent boutique hotel at the edge of the lush Karura Forest. Blending artful design with stylish sophistication, it seamlessly integrates natural forest aspects into the décor.
The hotel opened in June 2024 and is the first MGallery hotel in Sub-Saharan Africa, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s expansion into the region. It is indeed a new concept in Nairobi’s hospitality scene.
The hotel’s unique design combines gemstones, crystals, greenery, light, and water, creating an enchanting atmosphere and capturing the spirit of Nairobi.
I was mesmerised by the delicate chains cascading from the ceiling and pillars around the hotel, imitating the vines of Karura Forest. There is a gentle waterfall flowing down the entrance stairs, reminding guests of Nairobi’s refreshing waters, and the sound of cascading water mingles with the gentle forest breeze in the open entrance area.
The sensation of walking into the lobby was like being in a forest in Nairobi, with banana trees and ponds, while the colour-changing glass and dichroic film and the marble floor glimmered like the hidden gems beneath the earth. The lighting above the reception desk gives the impression of tiny jewels falling from the sky. The reception and bar counters are made of transparent glass bricks, adding to the luxurious ambience.
Vibrant Contemporary Rooms
On entering my spacious luxury suite, I was delighted to find exquisite petit fours beautifully presented as well as a luxury box of dried fruit, dates, and spicy coated nuts — like opening a tiny jewellery box of tasty offerings. Delicate stemware of subtly coloured changing glass, hanging from a private bar, was inviting enough to entertain guests lavishly.
The 105 rooms and suites are like delicate jewellery boxes with modern designer décor and nature-inspired colours. With a spacious living area and private balcony with sun lounges, I felt cocooned in luxury. The breathtaking forest views extending to the city skyline were magnificent, especially at sunset.
It was difficult to leave the intricately designed luxurious room with its premium amenities — a neutral beige backdrop allowing decorative elements to shine; soft green fabrics, emerald rugs, crisp white linens, large mirrors and live plants, all creating a serene ambience. The bed lighting cast a gem-like reflection on the walls, and the decorative touches, like the chandelier shaped like a gemstone-adorned earring and fringed furniture, added glamour and charm.
The rooms have an open-plan bathroom with a deep stand-alone ceramic bath, a waterfall shower, and double basins.
What allured me were the beautiful bottles of luxurious, aromatic bath salts and foam — this prompted me to take the opportunity soon after arriving to pamper myself with a deep bath and a glass of bubbles.
The rooms are exceptionally comfortable, with king-sized beds, plush pillows and mattresses.
Treasure Found
Wide-eyed after exploring the hotel, I marvelled at the sparkling detail throughout, which led me to the hotel’s gemstone shop selling both precious and semi-precious jewellery and decorative items. I felt like a treasure hunter uncovering hidden riches in the forest depths — the glittering gemstones a reward for my discovery.
Location
At the edge of Kenya’s largest preserved urban forest — a lush, urban oasis with diverse birdlife and hidden waterfalls — the hotel is a mere 10 minutes from the forest gate.
Gem Forest Hotel is strategically situated near the vast United Nations Nairobi complex and Nairobi’s diplomatic quarter. Close by is the vibrant shopping mall Village Market with world-class restaurants and excellent shopping opportunities, as well as the renowned Masai Market on the rooftop, where trinkets and curios can be bought directly from local vendors.
Culinary Delights
Troy Mediterranean Mezze and Rooftop Bar
Excited friends joined me as we stepped into an evening of culinary storytelling. Sharing plates of Mediterranean-inspired tapas with highlights of labneh, Turkish flatbread, grilled chicken skewers, falafel, baba ghanoush, and other speciality cuisine from Greece and Turkey.
As the sun set behind the Karura Forest canopy, Troy, the rooftop Mediterranean bar, stirred to life with infectious music and cocktails glowing like liquid sunsets.
The central circular bar was captivating as it shimmered like a gem. Cosy seating nooks ensured that everyone enjoyed the breathtaking scenery. The décor is dominated by serene white and azure tones, reminiscent of the Mediterranean, with lighting fixtures resembling fishermen’s ropes — adding an authentic coastal charm to the ambience.
Kahani
At Kahani — meaning ‘story’ in Hindi — this contemporary Indian restaurant offers a vibrant journey with Indian flavours and modern twists, serving classic Indian cuisine reimagined with innovative techniques and presentations. Aromatic curries, inventive fusion plates, rich spices, and delicate desserts are served in a modern Indian setting.
Enchante Bistro
I did so enjoy this stylish brasserie bistro with its atmosphere of Southern Riviera charm, serving the culinary traditions of Italy, Spain, and France in a picturesque setting. What more could I ask for than a tender and moist rack of lamb with crushed roast potatoes and asparagus, and a glorious glass of robust Cabernet Sauvignon?
Le Mer
The perfect place to relax by the lounging pool in the mornings for health-inspired small bites, fresh juices, vitamin shots and smoothies, tailored to the clientele of the nearby spa.
As the day progresses, fun-sized appetisers and fresh seafood accompany summery mixology classics. I enjoyed the signature cocktails at Le Mer’s lounging pool and bar — perfect for a relaxing afternoon.
Amenities
Shanta Spa and Wellness Centre
The hotel spa is a haven for anyone looking for relaxation, rejuvenation, and a deeper connection to themselves. State-of-the-art equipment and plush amenities ensure a truly indulgent experience. Bespoke treatments are offered that utilise local ingredients and signature tools to harness the healing properties of precious stones.
And when stillness calls, the Shanta Spa restores balance with rituals that draw the weight of the city from your shoulders.
The warm, inviting infinity swimming pool is surrounded by lush greenery with views over the forest, while the Fitness Centre has state-of-the-art facilities for maintaining a fitness routine. The hotel also has seven meeting rooms with capacity for banquets.
Design Elements
The interior design crafted by the renowned Sundokovy Sisters is a masterpiece that blends Nairobi’s vibrant energy, the Karura Forest, and gemstones. The use of precious stones, crystals, and greenery creates a sophisticated ambience that is both calming and invigorating.
The owners’ family has a background in gems, and so the design incorporates reflective surfaces and geometric patterns to create captivating light and shadow plays reminiscent of precious gems and prisms.
As I wandered through the Gem Forest Hotel and stumbled upon the hidden trove of gemstones, this exquisite blend of elegance felt like an invitation to pause, to breathe, and to rediscover the quieter rhythms of life.
It is an invitation to Nairobi’s vibrant, creative pulse and natural wonders, whether you’re setting off on safari or pausing to soak in the city’s creative energy.
The staff were exceptional, providing top-notch service with a smile.
For the traveller who seeks not just a stay but a story, this glittering hotel with its elegant décor and serene atmosphere is waiting to be lived.
