Discovering Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge

If there were one more thing I could do, it would be to go on a luxury safari once again at Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge.

The lodge is situated in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, traversing over 75,000 hectares of true untamed Africa, where the plains teem with game and wild dogs roam freely amongst the Big Five.

The Journey to the Lodge

After our stay at one of the other game reserves, we were collected in a canopied safari vehicle by the friendly game ranger Wayne and tracker Herman. We were excited when Wayne took the initiative to show us a pack of wild dogs near a watering hole, where elephants, impala, and giraffes had gathered. We were also lucky enough to spot wildebeest and baboons on our way to the lodge.

The roads leading to Madikwe Hills were remarkably smooth, making the ride all the more enjoyable. The canopy shielded us from the direct sunlight, ensuring a luxurious and comfortable journey.

A Warm Welcome

As we approached the reception area, the staff were lined up to meet and greet us with utmost professionalism. Strict COVID protocols were followed from the start. The welcoming drinks and refreshing towels provided a truly invigorating arrival.

We were shown around by manager Hannes, who familiarised us with the lodge’s environment and layout. Walking along elevated wooden pathways, ten ultra-luxurious suites are ingeniously positioned amongst boulders and majestic tamboti trees. At night, hurricane lamps light the walkways, connecting the secluded suites to the central open-plan lounge, bar, wine cellar, library, and dining area. We immediately felt in tune with the surroundings, as the pathways weave among the trees, bringing a calming sensation to our souls.

Ultimate Suite Luxury

Upon entering our suite, we were overwhelmed by the pure luxury. The spacious suite featured a private deck, splash pool, gas fireplace, overhead fans, air-conditioning, outdoor shower, and a bathroom with both tub and shower.

We each received a reusable branded thermos water bottle to help conserve the environment.

Gourmet Dining Experiences

A warm and friendly atmosphere enveloped us during our three-course meals. The dining area overlooks a waterhole, the perfect spot to appreciate nature’s gifts in tranquillity. At night, gas heaters and candles created soft lighting, with atmospheric music playing softly. The food was delicious, presented with elegance that showcased the lodge’s exclusivity.

Prior to afternoon game drives, we enjoyed delicious snacks with hot or cold drinks. The staff’s professionalism and dedication made our stay truly memorable.

Unforgettable Game Drives

Game drives began at 16:00 in the afternoon and 06:00 in the morning, offering a five-star experience packed with luxuries. Our shaded safari vehicle came equipped with hand warmers, hot water bottles, hooded windproof ponchos, and warm fleece blankets for cooler times.

Wayne made our sundowners extra special with duck and eland prepared on a gas braai. Herman served as our barman, mixing cocktails and any drink of choice. On morning drives, we savoured Herman’s special bush mix, with individually packed and sealed snacks for convenience.

Herman is an excellent tracker who spotted all the animals on our list. Wayne’s knowledge of the reserve’s animals and birds enriched our understanding. We were privileged to see lions and cubs at play, white and black rhinos, buffaloes, scrub hares, ground squirrels, spotted hyenas, jackals, mongooses, warthogs, impala, kudu, oryx, zebras, steenbok, and gemsbok. One morning, Wayne ventured outside the reserve to show us hippos, crocodiles, and vervet monkeys. What a phenomenal adventure.

After each drive, staff welcomed us back with drinks and refreshing towels, perfecting the day.

Final Thoughts

Madikwe Hills Private Game Lodge exceeded all expectations—it is an understatement. They revealed the African skies and shooting stars, to infinity and beyond.
