Mamula Island by Banyan Tree: Six years in the making
Mamula Island by Banyan Tree in Montenegro was one of those places that left us wanting more. After an extraordinary six-year restoration, this 19th-century fortress had been transformed into one of Montenegro’s most exclusive retreats, while remaining authentic to its fascinating history.
Accessible only by boat, the journey itself felt special. As we approached the fortress across the sparkling sapphire waters of Boka Bay, we couldn’t help but feel a little excitement and anticipation. Mamula sat proudly on its own private island, quietly elegant and full of stories from both past and present.
The arrival experience was wonderful; we were greeted by the guest relations team before being whisked through beautifully manicured Mediterranean gardens by golf buggy to view the rooms and suites. From the moment we arrived, there was a sense of privacy and exclusivity that made it feel a world away from everyday life.
Although we only spent the day on the island, it was more than enough time to appreciate the remarkable vision behind the project. We settled beside the stunning central pool, where first-class service and a long, cool, refreshing lemon and mint cooler were greatly appreciated. Breathtaking sea views and an impossibly peaceful atmosphere made it very difficult to leave our sun loungers. But a leisurely lunch awaited us. We enjoyed fresh Mediterranean flavours, perfectly paired with the sunshine and sea breeze, before we headed down to the beach for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear sea.
Guests can enjoy a variety of restaurants and bars from the elegant Kamena, where seasonal local ingredients are transformed into Mediterranean dishes, to Parasol, the island’s vibrant poolside restaurant specialising in fresh seafood, and relaxed all-day dining. Perched above the sea, Celeste offers leisurely lunches and sunset dinners accompanied by those breathtaking views. These diverse dining experiences reflect the island’s ethos of seasonality and a deep connection to its spectacular coastal surroundings.
One of the highlights of our visit was touring several of the beautifully designed rooms and suites. Original stone walls blended seamlessly with contemporary interiors, while natural materials, a subtle colour palette, and amazing sea views created rooms that felt both luxurious and authentic.
We also enjoyed exploring the tranquil spa and wandering through the carefully restored spaces. The transformation was so impressive, ensuring the soul of the fortress was special.
Mamula Island was far more than a luxury hotel. It was a destination that effortlessly combined history, privacy, natural beauty and world-class hospitality, creating an experience that felt unique.
