Onguma Nature Reserve: A Luxury Gem Beside Etosha

Onguma Nature Reserve, located on the eastern side of Etosha National Park and bordering Fisher’s Pan, is one of Namibia’s best-kept secrets. With five lodges, two campsites and 34,000 hectares of private wilderness to explore, Onguma offers options to suit all tastes and budgets.

Abundant Wildlife and Birdwatching Paradise

Onguma Nature Reserve boasts over 30 different animal species, including plains game such as kudu, giraffe, eland, oryx, hartebeest, zebra, impala and the rare black rhino. Predators like lions, cheetah and leopard also roam here, alongside over 300 species of birds. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise, particularly during Namibia’s summer months when thousands of species migrate to the wetlands created by seasonal rains and ephemeral river systems.

Unmissable Game Activities and Safaris

Onguma offers a variety of game activities, including visits to the Onkolo photographic hide, guided interpretive bush walks and even a wildly romantic sleep-out on a custom-made “Dream Cruiser” parked in the wilderness under the stars.

In addition to sunset drives on Onguma, guests can enjoy day safaris into Etosha National Park, led by knowledgeable guides. The Namutoni entrance gate is just 50 metres from Onguma’s boundary. Etosha is home to four of the “Big Five” (no buffalo) and offers exceptional wildlife viewing all year round.

Accommodation-wise, Onguma provides a choice of five unique lodges and two well-equipped campsites. The lodges include The Fort, Tented Camp, Bush Camp, Onguma Etosha Aoba and the much-anticipated Camp Kala, which launched in November 2022.

Onguma The Fort

Onguma The Fort features a unique North African design, overlooking the beautiful Etosha Fisher’s Pan. It comprises 11 Bush Suites, a Honeymoon Suite and the expansive Sultan Suite.

Onguma Tented Camp

Onguma Tented Camp consists of just seven luxurious tents, arranged in a U-shape for maximum privacy and views over an active waterhole.

Onguma Bush Camp

Onguma Bush Camp has 18 rooms and is ideal for families, with family and loft rooms available. The lodge is fenced for added peace of mind for weary parents. A great open pool area ensures safe play, while lovely lawns provide ample space to run around.

Onguma Etosha Aoba

Onguma Etosha Aoba offers 11 bungalows, including three family units and a Honeymoon Bungalow with a romantic outside bath.

Onguma Camp Kala

Onguma Camp Kala is an ultra-exclusive, high-end camp with just four guest suites, perfect for exclusive use or individual bookings. Each suite features a private deck with fire pit, wood-fired hot tub and sala with decadent double day bed—all overlooking a busy waterhole. With its conical, mud-plastered central tower resembling a termite mound and the camp elevated on wooden stilts, it sets a new benchmark for luxury.
