A talented Scottish designer is weaving together tradition and innovation with the launch of her new luxury fashion house — House of Nairn, specialising in high-end, sustainable knitwear.

Catriona Nairn, who has been hand-knitting since the age of three, is now transforming her lifelong passion into a couture venture. After six decades of crafting beautiful garments by hand, Catriona has combined her artistry with cutting-edge technology to produce contemporary luxury pieces made to last.

With House of Nairn, Catriona transforms decades of expertise in hand knitting into a couture label where each piece is a dialogue between craft and environment. The collections are deeply inspired by the dramatic landscapes of her home: the rolling moorlands, windswept coasts, heather slopes, and glens of the Highlands. Natural phenomena — such as shifting light, seasonal tides, peat bogs, heather in bloom, and coastal hues — are translated into tactile textures, layering, and palette choices.

From the pale greys and silvers of mist over the Moray Firth, to the deep purples and russets of heather moor, to the greens of forest glades and the occasional burst of gorse yellow — these tones find expression in the yarns and patterns of each House of Nairn piece.

Catriona says: “I have always lived with the land around me — its wind currents, its colours, the rhythm of seasons. House of Nairn is my way of bringing that into garments, so wearers can carry a sense of Scotland with them which brings both timeless tradition but also a modern twist.”

Each piece from House of Nairn is designed and engineered in Scotland, combining modern digital knitting techniques with hand finishing. The yarns are ethically sourced — focusing on Scottish fibres such as cashmere, lambswool, alpaca, mohair, and organic cotton — chosen not only for their quality but also for how their natural tones harmonise with Scotland’s landscapes.

The house follows a low-waste philosophy: designs are developed in small runs, and remnant yarns are repurposed into accessories or limited-edition pieces. Collaborations with local artisans — dyers, spinners, and finishers in Scotland — ensure that traditional textile skills remain central to each creation.

House of Nairn offers both ready-to-wear collections and bespoke commissions. Current pieces include the Lochan Tuin scarf, inspired by the rolling hills and water. For bespoke projects, clients can work directly with Catriona to incorporate their desired colour stories or landscape inspirations into unique garments or capsule ranges.
