Steam Dream Rail Co. – Luxury train travel with Vintage style first class
Discovering Steam Dreams Rail Co.’s Luxury Steam Train Journey
What better way to spend a day after a busy week than luxuriating in the first-class carriage of a steam train, travelling to Carlisle on the Scottish border and back from Euston station in London?
When invited to experience this journey, I must admit I was not initially enthusiastic. However, after reading the Steam Dreams Rail Co. website and reviews, I had a swift change of heart. It sounded amazing, and we were not disappointed!
Boarding and Breakfast in Vintage First-Class Style
We joined the luxury train at Milton Keynes early one Saturday morning, greeted by the Steam Dreams Rail Co. concierge who guided us aboard. We settled into huge, soft velvet armchair-like 1950s elegant seating, with tables beautifully laid for breakfast. First-class carriages offer shared tables or tables for two (supplement applies, subject to availability).
As we departed Milton Keynes, we were offered a glass of champagne or a Bellini—it was only 8 a.m., but already a great start. Soon after came porridge with whisky-soaked raisins or yogurt with granola and fruit, followed by a full English breakfast with a Scottish twist of black pudding, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, plus juice, tea, and coffee. Hours later, cake and coffee ensured we stayed satisfied. The service was impeccable, with bone china, crisp white linen, and silver cutlery—truly the most stylish way to travel.
Scenic Routes and Iconic Steam Power
Sitting back to enjoy the view proved deeply relaxing. The initial scenery was unremarkable, but breakfast kept us occupied. Reaching the Blackburn area, it transformed: pretty villages, stunning countryside, viaducts, ancient bridges, old church ruins, sheep, and countless train spotters. We were hauled by the iconic Royal Scot steam engine, built in 1927 for the fastest services between London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow. We picked it up at Crewe for the final leg of the Settle and Carlisle route.
Carlisle Stop and Gourmet Dinner Return
After a couple of hours in Carlisle, we rejoined for the swift return to Euston via Milton Keynes. The grandeur continued with a five-course gourmet dinner: an assiette of fish, duck with fondant potatoes and trimmings, cheese board, gingerbread sponge, coffee, and petit fours—all paired with choices from the extensive chargeable drinks menu.
The return was comfortable, blissful, and the cuisine stupendous.
