The Reach at Piccadilly, Manchester: A Tribute Portfolio Hotel

From the moment we rolled our suitcases up to The Reach, I had that familiar feeling you get when a place immediately surprises you – in a good way. This isn’t your typical chain hotel. The building sits right on the edge of the historic Rochdale Canal, and there’s something incredibly calming about seeing the water drift past, especially in a city as energetic as Manchester. Standing there, you get this blend of old-meets-new: industrial heritage, exposed textures, soft lighting, contemporary touches – all subtly nodding to Manchester’s working-city roots. The location couldn’t be easier.

We stayed in a Deluxe Double with Balcony, and it felt like a really lovely mix of city chic and “I could actually relax here.” The wooden floors, panelled walls, wrap-around ambient lighting – it all made the room feel warm and quietly luxurious. After a full day out, it genuinely felt soothing to step into. There were lots of thoughtful touches: a Nespresso machine for early mornings, great toiletries and a walk-in wet room with both rain and handheld showers. The bed was heavenly – no exaggeration. I’d read a few reviews praising the bedding and thought, “How good can it be?” But yes, it’s that good. If I’m being practical, the room did feel a little cosy once we properly unpacked. Not uncomfortable, just compact. For a couple of nights, it’s perfect, but for longer stays or people who travel with half their wardrobe, you may wish you had a little more wiggle room. Still, overall it’s stylish, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed – just worth noting the size depending on your travel habits.

One of my favourite parts of staying here was the ground-floor Lock 84 Restaurant & Bar. The floor-to-ceiling windows look straight out onto the canal, and there’s something so unexpectedly peaceful about sipping your coffee with that gentle waterway backdrop. Breakfasts were a pleasure: everything from full English plates to continental spreads and plenty of vegan/vegetarian options. It made mornings simple, tasty, and flexible. Come evening, the sharing plates and relaxed dining style work brilliantly, whether you’re catching up with friends or winding down after exploring the city. Honestly, the canal views alone elevate it – it feels atmospheric without even trying.

The team here really stood out. Warm, friendly, helpful – but not in a rehearsed way. It genuinely felt like they enjoyed making people feel welcome, and that makes a huge difference. As for the location, it’s one of the hotel’s biggest strengths. You’re minutes from pretty much everything: bars, galleries, transport links, and shopping. Yet step behind the building, and you’ve got that quiet canal, which instantly softens the pace. It’s also pet-friendly, which I love – always a plus for those who travel with furry family members. There’s a small but handy gym too. Nothing extravagant, but perfect if you like stretching out or getting a quick workout in before the day starts.

If you’re coming to Manchester for a quick getaway, a gig, a weekend exploring the city, or even a work trip where convenience and style matter, The Reach at Piccadilly fits the bill beautifully. It’s modern, characterful, and rooted in the city’s history without feeling themed or gimmicky. If you prefer big, spacious luxury, you might find the rooms a little snug – but that’s really the only thing to keep in mind. For everyone else, it hits that sweet spot: step outside, and you’re in the heart of Manchester; step inside, and you’re by the water, winding down. A stay that feels both connected and calming – and that’s a balance not many city hotels manage to get right.
