Discovering The Vishuis in Hermanus Old Town

The Vishuis, located in the heart of Hermanus Old Town, is a collection of iconic fisherman cottages—heritage buildings restored and modernised to suit the independent traveller and local alike. These comfortable cottages, equipped with modern amenities and contemporary décor, are beautifully arranged around an enchanting garden courtyard with a plunge pool. Here, guests enjoy memorable experiences, embracing not only beauty, luxury, and opulence but also rich heritage and culture—far more than expected.

A Warm Welcome and Prime Location

The warm, homely welcome upon arrival at The Vishuis was among the best check-in experiences I have had—we were personally greeted by owner Marc, a friendly and hospitable host. Directions are straightforward, leading directly to the front entrance.

Situated on a quiet back road with no passing traffic, The Vishuis is conveniently close to the village centre. It offers three self-contained suites—the Courtyard Suites—and a luxury cottage with a full kitchen. Each suite features a large, open-plan room with sleeping and lounge areas, a kitchenette, a Morso fireplace, and television with DStv. The light and airy luxury cottage boasts a spacious open-plan living room, lounge area, and fully equipped gourmet kitchen.

Exploring Hermanus and Luxurious Nights

All Hermanus facilities are just 200m away. A short walk leads to sea-facing restaurants—where we savoured the finest seafood pasta and refreshing cocktails—cafés, art galleries, boutiques, bookshops, Market Square, and the Waterfront. Venture slightly further to the Old Harbour’s stunning sea views, the Cliff Path, whale-viewing sites, cliff sculptures, and a natural marine tidal rock pool (300m) for an early morning swim.

Most of all, I cherished the Cliff Path walk, stretching 10km from New Harbour to Grotto Beach. Though I did not complete the full length, the mesmerising views, sea breeze, and fresh ocean air were incomparable—a picture-perfect setting for photography enthusiasts.

Our nights were spent in an African-themed suite, blending modern and vintage South African touches. A cosy, effective fireplace enhanced the ambience, complemented by local artworks, a super-comfy bed with fine linen, and ultra-soft, fluffy cotton bath towels. The Vishuis masterfully combines comfort and luxury, attending to every guest’s needs.
