Wahaca plates shared supper club for International Women’s Day
Wahaca brought together Tommi Miers and fellow foodies for an evening in celebration of International Women’s Day.
Leyla Kazim and Crystelle Pereira joined forces with Wahaca co-founder Tommi Miers for Plates Shared: a supper club to mark International Women’s Day 2023. The trio hosted the one-off event at Wahaca Shoreditch on 8th March, with guests enjoying a specially created five-course menu. Tickets were priced at £60.
The ever-evolving UK food scene is a hotbed of established and emerging female talent. To mark the occasion, pioneering chef and Wahaca co-founder Tommi Miers teamed up with two fellow women in food to combine their diverse culinary expertise for a celebratory evening of sharing.
Leyla Kazim, known for presenting on BBC Radio 4’s award-winning The Food Programme and her role as a critic on Masterchef: The Professionals, was brought up enjoying exceptional cooking thanks to her Mauritian and Turkish-Cypriot parents.
Bringing her baking skills to national TV as a finalist on The Great British Bake Off, Crystelle Pereira shares an equal passion for cooking. Her dishes are known for their diversity of tastes and flavours, inspired by her Portuguese-Goan family and documented in her debut cookbook, Flavour Kitchen.
The trio collaborated in recent weeks to blend elements of their diverse culinary experiences, creating a top-notch menu perfect for celebratory sharing on International Women’s Day 2023.
The delicious results were enjoyed at Plates Shared—a one-off supper club at Wahaca’s Shoreditch restaurant on Wednesday 8th March. Guests savoured a specially created five-course tasting menu, with plates including smoky tomato fideos with grilled mussels and herb butter, five-hour grass-fed short rib with Tehuano sauce and toasted almonds, and grilled corn bread with blood orange and piloncillo caramel. In keeping with the global celebration of women’s achievements and talent, the kitchen and front-of-house staff included women from Wahaca’s brilliant team.
Profits from the evening were donated to Practical Action, a charity focused on tackling gender equality and poverty in the developing world.
Tommi Miers commented: “Being surrounded by inspiring women captures the essence of International Women’s Day, so I was thrilled we made this happen with our supper club. Whether through our wonderful suppliers, the women on our teams who turn up every day to give it their all in the Wahaca kitchens, or the exciting guest appearances of Crystelle and Leyla—two women I very much admire—I felt excited to celebrate some female power in our kitchens. It was great fun dreaming up this very special menu, and it was wonderful seeing it all come to life on the 8th!”
Tickets were available for £60 here.
